| | | grrrl books so im ressearching for my dissertation....still not totally sure what the aim is gonna be but my vague idea is something to do with powerful women - both musicians and artists as im doing a fine art degree. maybe something to do with men trying to bring them down or maybe something to do with the tough laddish attitude lots of famous women have developed or i dunno something....i r;y dont know!! hehe i dont want it to be a manhating essay tho! just celebrating the girls....i have to ask a few questions in it but am struggling a bit in what direction to take it in... has anyone read any good books on the subject that could help me out and give me some ideas...i'd really appreciate it! thanks x |

| | | are you interested in poets as well? if so i would suggest sylvia plath theres been a bunch of biographys written such as the haunting of slyvia plath. another powerful poet was anne sexton again theere are biographies about her.
and there's always girl interupted book because sussanna kaysen was very strong to survive her experience and come out well at the end of it (i should know i've been put into a pysciatric hospital before)
actress wise i guess drew barrymore might be good after all her problems with drug addiction at a young age
you also might want to research bette davies and vivean leigh
hope that's helped a bit
if you wanna do the men bringing them down angle both sylvia plath and vivian leigh were left for other women by their husbands, i think bette davies had an abusive marriage and anne sexton was abused by her father when she was a child

I really enjoyed it, because it deals with more recent feminism. It's nnice to read a list of bands/singers and think "Wow, I listen to them!". It's not all abstract. |

| | | Andrea Juno: "Angry Women" From Publishers Weekly
In this illustrated, interview-format volume, 16 women performance artists animatedly address the volatile issues of male domination, feminism, race and denial. Among the modern warriors here are Diamanda Galas6 , a composer of ritualistic "plague masses" about AIDS who refuses to tolerate pity or weakness; Lydia Lunch, a self-described "instigator" who explains that her graphic portrayals of exploitation stem from her victimization as a child; and Wanda Coleman, a poet who rages against racism and ignorance. Goddess worshipper and former porn star Annie Sprinkle enthusiastically promotes positive sexual attitudes; bell hooks eloquently discusses societal power structures in terms of race and gender; Holly Hughes, Sapphire and Susie Bright expound on lesbianism and oppression; pro-choice advocates Suzy Kerr and Dianne Malley describe their struggles for reproductive rights. Incendiary opinions of current issues such as the Gulf War and censorship and frequent allusions to empowering art and literature make this an excellent reference source. These informed discussions arm readers verbally, philosophically and behaviorally and provide uncompromising role models for women actively seeking change. The editors are publishers of Re/Search.

I don't know how to be mad at someone who has so little intellect and is so very naive
I don't really know where to go with this
Congratulations, you've totally put me in a flummox.
