| | You guys should PM ella luciana - she's the moderator of The Library. As far as i remember, there was a bookclub here last year. I'm sure if there were enough people interested, someone could set one up. |

| | Hey guys
I've replied to Pacific, but I'll let you all know what I said.
Basically, we used to have a bookclub here, which was pretty successful for a while, but towards the end, most had given up on it. There were problems that kept cropping up, and diminishing commitment from a lot of the members. It seemed that we kind of gave up on it, but in the month or so pre-hack, myself and some others, including, I think, Lemonade and schroeder, discussed starting a new one, and were coming up with ideas on how to avoid the pitfalls of the last club.
The main problems with the last book club were, I feel: - We read and discussed one book a month. With people working, studying etc, many found that they didn't have time to find the book (some were hard to come by), read it, analyse it and discuss it in that time.
- There were lots of members, which is great, but each member was meant to get a chance to choose the book for discussion that month. This meant that some people just didn't read the books others suggested, and just waited until it was time for them to suggest their own book.
- Because of the number of members and the short time period, it had to be very organised, which happened for the most part - those people in charge were great, but understandably, sometimes things fell through - obviously KR's Book Club couldn't be their number one priority all the time.
I'm sure there's more, but they'll crop up later.
I should make it clear at this point that I was a member of the last Book Club, and would love for us to have a new one to get involved in.
Anyway, the best way I can think of going about this is: - For a preliminary period at least, having a longer time to read and discuss the books. I suggest either 2 or 3 months. I know this seems like an excessive length of time, but I really believe that this way, even if people have a lot going on in their lives - a big workload, family issues or whatever - they can still have time to be involved. It also means that if people have to order the book, and it takes 3 weeks to arrive, then they still have time to read and discuss.
- To have a group of maybe 4 people who can be in charge, not of the group, or anything, but of choosing books. I think all members should participate in suggesting books at the end of each (let's say) 3 month period, for the next session. The 4 "organisers" can then discuss these in PMs and come up with a shortlist of maybe 5, then the rest of the members can vote on them. In the last club, lots of people who didn'y vote for the successful book simply chose not to read it, which they were free to do, but it was kind of disappointing.
Those are my two main suggestions. I don't have anyone in mind for the organisers or anything, and I'm not trying to take control, but I think that this way might be the best way to go about it.
What do you think? If you don't like any of these ideas, that's fine, I'll sticky whatever needs to be stickied and help out in any way I can.
Mh

| | | Hey thanks for posting those good ideas ella luciana. I think we should take on board your suggestions ie one book every three months, meaning that everyone could get a chance to get hold of a copy and really read and get a proper chance to disuss it. I'd be happy to be part of the group to help organize things. Perhaps this thread could be stickied and people can spend the next few weeks letting us know if they are interested in joining. Depending on the response we can take things from there. |

ZIN | Yeah, I thought it was you and tracyr, but I couldn't remember for sure. And I was an early member - I LOVED that club, but I was having trouble keeping up with it, with all the university work I had to do... I think other people had similar problems.
Anyway, I'll sticky this thread, and we'll see if we can have some decisions made by, say, the end of the week? That means we can start to suggest books for next Monday (the 7th?). Sound good, people?
xx

Me too!!! I love reading and I alwyas feel I want to share my thoughts when Ive read a book with others, but people usually gets kind of bored when Im tryingt to tell them about a book Ive read.. so a book club was perfect!
Hopefully, I will be able to get the books this time and have the TIME to read them.. |
