What Are You Reading & How Was It?? (Spring/Summer 2012 Edition)

the monthly threads never seem to get all that big, so why not just do it by season?

just starting this...

just downloaded this, will read soon.

i only picked this up because NPR recommended it. but it is horribly, predictably, retarded. the language is gnawing, the writing style is so adolescent, and the entire thing is one materialistic, g-rated trek through this tart's idea of the new york UES scene. i am so frustrated with NPR, who did not one but TWO write ups on this book saying it's fantastic and takes chick-lit out of the gutter, and is compelling and clever and uses the same themes of fashion and relationship drama but recasts the whole thing... IT DOES NOT.
it's a whiny pseudo-manifesto about brats.
but you probably could have discerned that from the title and cover alone.

C.D. Wright is arguably my favorite poet and prose writer, so I already knew this was going to be fantastic. I'd picked up selected passages from this book already, but it's nice to have it all at once. It is FANTASTIC and I highly recommend it and all her books.

bergdorf blondes is a fluffy beach read. but i like that you even admitted to reading it. it's been about 10 years since i read it but have you gotten to the part in paris yet? that just sums up the whole book, girl interupted at the ritz.

Scar Tissue about Anthony Kiedis...

OH.MY.GOD.

Spider/Blackie is one of the greatest human beings in recorded history. Christ..this book cannot be real..it has to be made up for comic effect...He cannot be serious...I've been laughing so hard I've nearly choked a few times...

oh i finished it in like 2 days!
it IS kind of lovable fluff at some moments, but the plot just goes... nowhere. and the characters are so unapologetically hollow it's hard to want to side with any of the characters because they're just these empty Chloe-clad shells of witty dialogue snippets of heiress-speak, trotting around the globe saying things like "tres chic!" in their PJs.

sometimes i wondered though if the author was intentionally aware and playing into the campiness or of it just is as flat and narrative as it appears?

this is the retarded cycle i read on. like 3 grownup things, 1 artsy thing, and 1 trashy chick lit about *****ing and breakups.
so if you have any other suggestions for that latter category, i secretly want them.

i kindof want to read Taylor from Real Housewives Beverly Hills memoir that she "wrote", about being a battered wife and lip-implant junkie anorexic celebrity mother, with a husband who killed himself and spent them broke and lied about it. she's like a real life Sally Field movie.
i think i'm gonna Kindle that ****...

plum skyes just writes like that. her columns in vogue were always vapid too.

i used to love me some chick lit for the beach or gym but i would goodwill after i was done to rid myself of the shame. i remember the right address being enjoyable. there's always candice bushnell if you never got around to reading to 4 blondes or lipstick jungle. will try to think of more.
