funny good fiction books.

i am kr user anna wulf, and i am a member of a book group.

a book group whose fellow members regularly choose for us to read books with grim subject matters; the siege of leningrad, life as a slave on a jamaican sugar-cane plantation, being locked inside a garden shed for years on end - most of which were really well written, but UTTERLY DEPRESSING

the only light relief came when someone earnestly recommended a mills and boon type novel where the simpering female protagonist enjoyed multiple orgasms due to her lover rubbing a pencil against her forehead. intense.

i want to suggest a good funny fiction book, but the only ones that come to mind are either funny weird or really dark and twisted humour, which isn't to everyone's liking.

so, what funny good fiction books do you like?

Good Omens! First book that comes to mind, quite frankly. Hilarious, well-written, with at least some manner of depth to it. And some good old fashioned nice Christian Apocalypse fanfic, which is pretty hard to pass up on.

I'd also think maybe Breakfast of Champions, if it isn't too obvious of a choice. Again, plenty of depth, but with some nice drawings of assholes to ease you into said depth.

I can't think of anything I've read that's been side-splittingly funny, but I always enjoy Douglas Coupland novels. Dark, but with a GSOH.

That's the closest I get to funny fiction. That and the Tales of the City series.

The Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford. Its absolutely hilarious, very short, and can pretend to be a serious book club book because its written about the world between the war, has lots to say on class etc. Its probably my favourite go-to book in the world. I've read it probably about 10 times between when I first read it at 9 and 27 and its still very funny.

also this, but it's way less bookclub friendly (unless you have a superbly open minded bookclub):
