| | | similar to American Psycho What can you people recommend?
I have totally run out of books to read.
I love reading, and hate not having any idea what to read next.
My last read was American Psycho, after LOVING the film for so long, finally got around to reading the book, and I must say, was probably the best book I've ever read.
Can anyone suggest anything thats somewhat similar? |

No, I haven't read anything else by him.
I have read reviews on them, and they all don't seem as gripping as American Psycho.
Maybe I shouldn't be put off with what other people think though huh!
I watched the film "rules of attraction" the other night, and it was diabolical, words can not discribe how awful it was. So that kinda put me off reading that one.
I will do and look up authors you suggested though. |

| | | Haruki Murakami and Jostein Gaarder are two good modern authors, most of the stuff i read is older. |

Can anyone suggest anything thats somewhat similar? | That book seriously traumatised me. If you enjoy being traumatised, I suggest Requiem for a Dream by Hubert Selby Jr. |

| | | there is nothing else in the world like american psycho. it's the most horrible/brilliant thing ever.
but similar books would be anything else by BEE (his best books are definitely glamorama, lunar park and the rules of attraction. the book is far better than the movie)... anything by chuck palahniuk because he is really quite disgusting at times. in a good way.
and i'd say irvine welsh as well.
but i've never come across anything that can measure up to the violence in american psycho. and i don't think anyone else will ever have enough guts to try and publish another book like that.

| | | You NEED to read some Hubert Selby Jr, he wrote Requiem For A Dream (which the film was based on) but if your looking for something similar to American Psycho you should read 'The Room', which is often compared to it but usually wins out in the gross/disturbing stakes. Very intense. I'd also recommend 'Last Exit To Brooklyn' and 'The Demon'.
And you've probably read it, but Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk (better than the film) has the same nihilistic attitude. |

| | | Anybody read "Dirty Weekend" by Helen Zahavi? It's a very dark comic feminist revenge fantasy. Woman spends a whole weekend killing men ~ but the author avoids making it TOO simplistic. ((Ie, not all the victims deserve being killed, so you're not just cheering on the protagonist, ala "Thelma & Louise".)
It's a bit like a "reply" to American Psycho in some ways. When it first came out it caused a big fuss. Zahavi's sanity was (seriously) debated in the British press at one point, by a panel of psychiatrists. |

| | | i always thought B.E.E was one of those modern authors who relies on a gimmick or something rather than having genuinely good and touching writing. Am i wrong? you lot seem to love him so maybe i'll check him out. btw i place Palahniuk in that bracket. |

that's why i usually tell people to read glamorama or lunar park instead of the first few novels he wrote. they're the only ones with any real plotline.
i suppose if that's what you like (and i do) then i doesn't matter so much that there's no story. i like what he does, because i like his style of writing and the fact that 99% of his characters have absolutely no sense of hope.
