His Dark Materials (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass) by Philip Pullman is pretty amazing!

They do get a bit deep, but they're still pretty amazing.

I kind of miss YA fantasy books. I dunno. I've gotten all serious with my reading lately. Boring.

But um someone in her late 20s out of the blue recommended someone named Patricia McKillip? Maybe you'd like her.
That same person recommended a trilogy to me back when I was about 14 that I loved... about talking cats? Or a woman who could read their mind and went around with a sword? Gatta something? I can't find it on any websites. But I loved it when I was 14. This is no help, but if you find a thick ya fantasy book about talking cats I recommend it especially if you like cats. I was hooked.

I remember LOVING Susan Cooper's Dark is Rising series. It's got some Norse mythology mixed w/ King Arthur-type stories and good v. evil and men on horses and kids going into different worlds and something about a tree. No vampires, though.

But I know what you mean. There's a copy of Twilight at my aunt and uncles house, which is where I'm going for the next few days, and for the first time I am tempted...

I actually won those books on ebay in this past week
I'll tell you what I think.

I second this, she's a great writer. The Obernewtyn Chronicles are excellent.

Other recommendations:
Night World and Dark Visions series - L.J. Smith (ya)
The Immortals series - Tamora Pierce (ya)
Mercy Thompson series - Patricia Briggs (adult)
Chronicles of Elantra - Michelle Sagara (adult)

I hate the way they've changed the Vampire Diaries covers so it looks like L. J. Smith copied Twilight despite being published over 10 years ago.
