It supposedly deals with his mother's murder and growing up poor and fucked up in LA. It might be more of a memoir than autobiography though. Is there much of a difference?

It would work in the non-fiction element.
For my "Danger And Domesticity in American Literature" module I wrote an essay on My Dark Places and The Secret History.
My Dark Places is interesting because it is classed as non fiction, but there are real elements of fictionalisation in some parts.
You should read it. I found it really interesting, but the figure of Ellroy in it really frustrated me. There are some seriously fucked up moments in it, but it is a really good read.
