| | | jane austen ive never read anything by jane austen before. i have pride and prejudice. i started reading it yesterday. it strikes me as ridiculous. mostly the language. i can't really get past that. i really like classic novels. im reading it as though it is satirical of one. its ruining it for me. how do i stop doing that. it just seems so over the top. or does everyone just think its ridiculous too but like it anyway?

| | | i was supposed to read Emma last semester but i found it so...BLAH, for lack of a better word, that i didn't get past the first two chapters. it was sort of like 19th century chick-lit or something. i just hated it. which i suppose is sacrilege, but whatever.
i was supposed to read Pride & Prejudice a couple of years ago and again, i couldn't get past the first two chapters. it's supposed to be a good book though. and i would much rather try to read P&P again than try Emma again. blah.
i like the Brontes a lot better. |

| | i like the brontes better too but i DO like austen.
sense and sensibility is my favourite.
the language is definitely a lot more frilly than most classics haha but that's part of the fun of the books i think. the stories are still good if you stick with it!

| | | I enjoy Jane Austen, but I know what you mean about the language. It's almost more mechanical than fluid. That doesn't really bother me, though. It's just her style, innit. I find the Brontes' language somewhat similar, but I prefer them to Austen because the plots are more interesting. |

| | | I think sometimes people miss Austen's humour. To be honest I'm not the biggest fan of her work and the subject matter is always the same (get those daughters married off!) but Northanger Abbey is a good read and kinda makes fun of the whole romance novel thing.
But yeah she takes 4 chapters to say what could be covered in a sentence, I'm not about to read some Jane Austen any time soon. |

they all had great story lines but i do agree with you about the language she uses.
its definitely fancy if nothing else.

| | | You should perhaps read Northanger Abbey. She mocks the whole gothic novel thing.

BECAUSE AUSTEN IS HILARIOUS.
p&p is basically the biggest piss-take austen could muster - & what a piss-take it is. this is satire! once i realised that i totally fell in love with her. because her tongue is so far in her cheek i'm surprised she didn't swallow it.
she is making fun of the frilly rich people and their pink parasols.
also: yes i do love marian keyes. and i am totally going to shake you by the shoulders next time i see you for revealing that tidbit to the big kr for everyone to read.
I AM MEANT TO BE HIGH BROW.
also, i mean, because you guys decided to make this about me: i am a big lover of frilly romancey novels, i mean lolita is one of my all-time favourites. but that said, i also am a big fan of minimalism. hemmingway (oh my god, i am so going to be humiliated if you only spell that with one "m". i am having a moment and can't remember which it is) is one of my all-time favourites and he is KNOWN for being no-frills.
so there we go.

the brontes are fantastic as well.
i think these hearty english cunnies are really something else. |

Lily Explains It All For You. | well you big prissy grandstander. did you not see me say i was reading it as satirical? I KNEW IT. i'll prolly like it more too, now.
at thi smoment im going to disclose i don't know who marian keyes is and i think im grateful for my complete disregard for popular culture. only lily could like something utterly shitty and make it seem all, cute. when its clearly not.
i didn't think lolita was that frilly. i mean this austen is just full of priss.
