i didn't think lolita was that frilly. i mean this austen is just full of priss.
i think humbert is a really big frilly girls blouse. "you can always count on a murderer for fancy prose style" etc. i was just thinking in terms of style. lolita is all lace ruffles.

i think p&p DEFINITELY benefits from being understood as satire. i tried to read it numerous times before i realised that and totally thought it was dull & retarded. but then it was understood, and i laughed all the way through.

p&p is basically the biggest piss-take austen could muster - & what a piss-take it is. this is satire! once i realised that i totally fell in love with her. because her tongue is so far in her cheek i'm surprised she didn't swallow it.

she is making fun of the frilly rich people and their pink parasols.

also: yes i do love marian keyes. and i am totally going to shake you by the shoulders next time i see you for revealing that tidbit to the big kr for everyone to read.

I AM MEANT TO BE HIGH BROW.

also, i mean, because you guys decided to make this about me: i am a big lover of frilly romancey novels, i mean lolita is one of my all-time favourites. but that said, i also am a big fan of minimalism. hemmingway (oh my god, i am so going to be humiliated if you only spell that with one "m". i am having a moment and can't remember which it is) is one of my all-time favourites and he is KNOWN for being no-frills.

so there we go.

Lily Explains It All For You.
GASP.

but at the same time. haha, i knew it.

anyway that's all pretty weird in a way because i don't like austen, i don't like hemingway (it's only got one M ) but i love Lolita. and i agree that it has fancy prose style, but not really frilly in the austen sense of the word?

i probably need to take all this satirical stuff into consideration the next time i try to read P&P.

i have been in a big jane austen mood of late. i have been watching all the latest itv adaptions (fuck is jj field who plays henry tilney HOT).

i've since read sense and sensibility..fuck does marianne annoy me but i hate what willoughby became.

and just finished re-reading persuasion which i skimmed for my first year english at uni. fark what was i missing. i think persuasion is now my fave over emma which i am going to also re-read and re-read pride and prej which is another fave.

my fave of her heroine's is anne though fuck is she a goddamn saint and wentworth's letter to her was a bit melodramatic and over the top but i can't help but like it....she is a bit mills and boon but far more highbrow and funnier. especially when she talks about sir elliot.

i really want to read northanger abbey and mansfield park which i haven't. the brilliant thing is you can just download it free off the net but i don't like to read a4 printouts.

I'm a sucka for those BBC adaptations They're actually great! Especially the Sense and Sensibility one. I must look out for some kind of Austen boxed set.

I don't think they did a very good job of Jane Eyre tho.

I find jane austen to be quite overrated in the literary spectrum. the first chapter of genesis is a more enthralling read than most of her best work. it even has more to say about prose styling. I like to be entertained when I read and Jane Austen could never succeed in making me laugh in the same way she could succeed in making me believe that the inner world of 19th century womanhood is more boring and mindless than two geriatrics shopping for fruit for a colon cleanse.
