| | | Book Club: Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto This is the next book we'll be reading for the KR Book Group/Club/Malarkey. Get hold of a copy and join in.
With the publication of Kitchen, the dazzling English-language debut that is still her best-loved book, the literary world realized that Yoshimoto was a young writer of enduring talent whose work has quickly earned a place among the best of contemporary Japanese literature. Kitchen is an enchantingly original book that juxtaposes two tales about mothers, love, tragedy, and the power of the kitchen and home in the lives of a pair of free-spirited young women in contemporary Japan. Mikage, the heroine, is an orphan raised by her grandmother, who has passed away. Grieving, Mikage is taken in by her friend Yoichi and his mother (who is really his cross-dressing father) Eriko. As the three of them form an improvised family that soon weathers its own tragic losses, Yoshimoto spins a lovely, evocative tale with the kitchen and the comforts of home at its heart. In a whimsical style that recalls the early Marguerite Duras, "Kitchen" and its companion story, "Moonlight Shadow," are elegant tales whose seeming simplicity is the ruse of a very special writer whose voice echoes in the mind and the soul. It'd be nice to have you sort-f leading discussion, or stirring some up at least, given that you've worked on it. Super rad!

i'm not a very good leader for discussion, but i'll try my best to keep it flowing! i have a lot of thoughts about this book.

| | | How likely is it that you're going to get anything from this book without an English A level equivalent?
I'd like to join in but I'm not sure if its worth it. Like as I made a whole thread about and don't want to sound like a loser again but is it hard? |

it actually has a paragraph beginning "ding dong. suddenly the doorbell rang" |

my course requires me to read about two novels a week and also do all the essays for them at the moment. don't be mad??
and as far as readability goes god*is*7, it is simple and uses really nice crisp sort of language. i read it over 1 day, no problem.
are we also going to read the second part of the book? i never bothered with that.
