The suggestion thread sort of fizzled out a bit, so to speed things along, here's the list of suggestions.
I'm putting the person who suggested each one down so that if they don't participate we all know who to bully and curse. I think if you're participating you should participate - I'm guilty of being half-assed about this, but I really loved some of the discussions we had when I actually made an effort, and I'm definitely going to do that this time.
Here's the deal - if you're going to read the book as part of the group I'll expect you to talk about it a bit (god, I feel like a teacher) but if we read your suggestion, you're especially obligated to discuss it. AT LENGTH. OR ELSE.

Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse (nominated by Dig For Fire)

Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood (nominated by Cricket)
In
Oryx and Crake, a science fiction novel that is more Swift than Heinlein, more cautionary tale than "fictional science" (no flying cars here), Margaret Atwood depicts a near-future world that turns from the merely horrible to the horrific, from a fool's paradise to a bio-wasteland. Snowman (a man once known as Jimmy) sleeps in a tree and just might be the only human left on our devastated planet. He is not entirely alone, however, as he considers himself the shepherd of a group of experimental, human-like creatures called the Children of Crake. As he scavenges and tends to his insect bites, Snowman recalls in flashbacks how the world fell apart. While the story begins with a rather ponderous set-up of what has become a clichéd landscape of the human endgame, littered with smashed computers and abandoned buildings, it takes on life when Snowman recalls his boyhood meeting with his best friend Crake: "Crake had a thing about him even then.... He generated awe ... in his dark laconic clothing." A dangerous genius, Crake is the book's most intriguing character. Crake and Jimmy live with all the other smart, rich people in the Compounds--gated company towns owned by biotech corporations. (Ordinary folks are kept outside the gates in the chaotic "pleeblands.") Meanwhile, beautiful Oryx, raised as a child prostitute in Southeast Asia, finds her way to the West and meets Crake and Jimmy, setting up an inevitable love triangle. Eventually Crake's experiments in bioengineering cause humanity's shockingly quick demise (with uncanny echoes of SARS, ebola, and mad cow disease), leaving Snowman to try to pick up the pieces. There are a few speed bumps along the way, including some clunky dialogue and heavy-handed symbols such as Snowman's broken watch, but once the bleak narrative gets moving, as Snowman sets out in search of the laboratory that seeded the world's destruction, it clips along at a good pace, with a healthy dose of wry humor.
Breakfast At Tiffany's by Truman Capote (nominated by Dig For Fire)
No matter how many times you read these stories, you will be moved by Mr. Capote's marvelous sense of and appreciation for the specialness of each life and the ways we belong to each other. Having not read Breakfast at Tiffany's for about 30 years, I came away much more impressed with the novel than I was the last time I read it. Perhaps you will have the same reaction upon rereading it as well. If you are reading it for the first time, you have a very nice surprise ahead of you! Breakfast at Tiffany's revolves around Holly Golightly, the former starlet and cafe society item, who floats lightly through life (like cotton fibers in the wind) looking for where she belongs. Ms. Golightly is and will remain one of the most original and intriguing characters in American fiction. Like a magician, she is both more and less than she seems. But she has an appreciation for people and animals that goes to the core of her soul that will touch you (if you are like me), especially in her desire that they and she be free...
The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison (nominated by Rosieholic)
Set in Lorain, Ohio, in 1941,
The Bluest Eye is something of an ensemble piece. The point of view is passed like a baton from one character to the next, with Morrison's own voice functioning as a kind of gold standard throughout. The focus, though, is on an 11-year-old black girl named Pecola Breedlove, whose entire family has been given a cosmetic cross to bear:
You looked at them and wondered why they were so ugly; you looked closely and could not find the source. Then you realized that it came from conviction, their conviction. It was as though some mysterious all-knowing master had given each one a cloak of ugliness to wear, and they had each accepted it without question.... And they took the ugliness in their hands, threw it as a mantle over them, and went about the world with it.
There are far uglier things in the world than, well, ugliness, and poor Pecola is subjected to most of them. She's spat upon, ridiculed, and ultimately raped and impregnated by her own father. No wonder she yearns to be the very opposite of what she is--yearns, in other words, to be a white child, possessed of the blondest hair and the bluest eye. This vein of self-hatred is exactly what keeps Morrison's novel from devolving into a cut-and-dried scenario of victimization. She may in fact pin

With sensuous prose, a dreamlike style infused with breathtakingly beautiful images and keen insight into human nature, Roy's debut novel charts fresh territory in the genre of magical, prismatic literature. Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad (nominated by Rosieholic)
Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness was first published in 1899 in serial form in London’s Blackwood’s Magazine. Loosely based on Conrad’s firsthand experience of rescuing a company agent from a remote station in the heart of the Congo, the novel is considered a literary bridge between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. With its modern literary approach to questions such as the ambiguous nature of good and evil, the novel foreshadows many of the themes and techniques that define modern literature.

While nihilism may be out of style in fiction-- and I'm not sure what the word means-- this novel surely qualifies. Besides sex and drugs, and certainly not in that order, there isn't much that interests Ari-- certainly going to college, finding a job or being decent to the people he has sex with are not in the picture. He doesn't like Melbourne or the Australians or the Greeks or the Vietnamese-- the list goes on and on.

Having seen Fincher's movie first, I was pleased to find that the book was sufficiently different so as to demand a thorough reading by all those who appreciate the film. The movie was a visual masterpiece, whereas the novel is a philosophical attack on our modern consumerist lifestyle. Tyler Durdan is the second coming, chosen to liberate our lost generation from the materiality and reproducibility that encompasses modern day society. Fincher did a fair bit of plot re-arranging for its translation to the screen, and whilst the results were brilliant, there are still further hidden gems that didn't make it. Anyone who appreciated the film should definately give this book a read.
