Either fiction or non-fiction, it's all good to me.
I'm looking for books written from an artist/musician/ or writers standpoint with referencs to other artists/musicians/writers in the book.
For example (and these are all fiction btw):
Diary by Chuck Palahniuk - the narrator was an artist. She was a painter and she often made references to other artists. She also briefly described some of her paintings, and the whole process for her. It was an amazing book (the first book I've ever read by Chuck P.) and I remember after I finished it, I felt so inspired by the book for some reason, that I attempted to try and paint something. I failed miserably. But that's besides the point. Cause man,... that book was great.
Bag of Bones by Stephen King - the narrator was an author with a regular spot on the NY Times bestseller list. He suffered from writers block throughout a good deal of the book, but he described the whole story-telling process very well, and this book, in a way, had a very similar effect on me, as Diary did. When I finished I decided I would try and write. However, I've been writing for years, so if anything the book inspired me and got me out of my writers block funk.
The Brooklyn Follies by Paul Auster - the narrator is an avid reader who's nephew attended college for a while with intentions of becoming a college professor. This unfortunately backfired on him so he worked at a bookstore in the city. He always spoke about his appreciate of literature, and writing and went on and on about many of his favorite authors, especially Kafka.
So uh yeah. Those are a few examples. If anyone knows of any fiction from an artist/musician/or writers standpoint let me know.
Non-fiction would also be good. I heard Henry Rollins wrote a few books, and I've been a fan of Black Flag for a while, so I might check that out. But yeah. Most any non-fiction from a creative person's standpoint is worth a look in my opinion.
Thanks
