Black Hole looks even more terrifying from that picture than I was already imagining from what people in the thread were saying. Think I'm going to have to get me a copy of that. Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed graphic novels becoming suspiciously cool these days? I guess there've been a lot of films based on them in recent years, though I don't really know if that's any more than normal or if I've just been more aware of it.

I like all the typical ones people have mentioned, Clowes, Tomine, Satrapi, David B, Spiegelman, but I'm surprised no-one's said Klimonowski (that I've noticed). His were some of the first graphic novels I read and I love his style. Really sleek, mysterious and image rather than text-driven, film noir style. Try 'The Secret'.

yes they definitely are, the medium thrives now and it's not thought of as nearly as geeky as it used to be. I do remember a time though when every single fucking book I bought had a foreword about how comics are a legitimate art, it became a bit boring, but certainly true.

no one has mentioned chris ware here either (i don't think) and whilst I'm not big on his story telling and wouldn't say Jimmy Corrigan was that great, he is a brilliant, well I dunno what you would call it. His comics are like a combination of family trees and mind maps.

these don't even do justice to him, there is an amazing short sotry about a lonely girl with one leg that's told with these massive beautiful shots of her lying in the middle of the page with all these pointers pointing to comics of her history (like it points to her leg and there is a small comic about how she lost her leg) and it strips her down so in the first one she's clothed, the second naked and third all her organs and skeleton. It's genuinely brilliant. but yeah, don't get jimmy corrigan it's kinda of a meh story, look for his short stories.

I just ordered a copy of The Rabbi's Cat by Joann Sfar. I'm really looking forward to reading it. It's about a cat who eats a parrot, then gains the ability to speak - and asks the Rabbi lots of things about God and Judaism. It looks so beautifully done.

I also just read a sad little book called Kaleb Wants To Kill A Dragon by an Israeli artist/writer called Michal Zori. I don't know if you could find it here, but it is in English.

I adore David Boring. I have a copy of From Hell I've never found time to open sat on my shelf, and I bought the Killing Joke the other day.

Thus ends my graphic novel chat.

i myself am really into jeffrey brown - clumsy, bighead, unlikely, etc.
he mainly does autobiographical stuff- but bighead is himself as a superhero pretty badass
