| | | This book is distubing! Has anyone read Monster Love by Carol Topolsky?
I've never cried and hated yuppies so much in my life.
The format in which it was written was amazing though. I hadn't read anything like it since the Seymoure Tapes.
Your thoughts? |

Post-modernism but without the unnecessary pretention and author-ego. |

| | | I read a book about ten years ago, when I was in my early teens called The Dumb House, which was kind of similar only almost more fucked up. It was about this guy who gets obsessed with how language develops so basically a) starts torturing mute kids and b)decides to raise his own set of twins in silence. They develop their own language aged about 5, so he tortures them and kills them. It kind of put me off the whole "parents murdering children" genre. |

Did you ever hear about this dude?
There was a really good article in the New Yorker last month about the detective who solved the case, I wish I still had it! |

That and the fact that I failed my second language... |

I just found the torture scenes a tad graphic, like when he sews the rat inside her vag I like the book don't get me wrong, but i dont think Bret Easton Ellis' head is a fun place to be. |

I know what you mean. But I'm a pathetic Easton Ellis fangirl.
I found the graphic scenes funny. Sometimes I pick up AP and flick straight to the murders, like the threesome where he decapitates a girl and puts her head on his cock.

| | i know where your coming from, i do like the dark humour, and the points he's making, but i'm slightly worried where some of the ideas and inspiration comes from
i think the thing with his ex girlfriend was the bit i found most disturbing, not sure why, but like i said, still like the book, it's good to be taken out of your comfort zone |

One didn't even resemble the other in any way whatsoever.
The book showed the dark side of Easton-Ellis' mind and life, and I related way more to the things he wrote about that were in fact happening in the drug culture and with the shallow, spoiled little sociopaths that I also knew in Los Angeles during that era more than anything I saw in that stupidass movie.
I agree though...the mind of Bret Easton Ellis can probably get a bit claustrophobic at times, to say the least. |
