Alright, I did a search on this forum first (the responsible thing to do) and what I found was scant.
My roommate has Me Talk Pretty One Day, and I keep picking it up and looking at it... but that's as far as its gone so far.
I just... I have an itch to read something by a famous author of, you know, the now. Between school and my pile of thrifted to-read books, I end up reading mostly older stuff, which is cool, but I'm just starting to feel, you know, out of touch. Is Me Talk Pretty One Day a good place to start? Other suggestions? Feeeeeeeelings?
i tried to get into him, bought me talk pretty, but didnt finish reading it i dont think, or maybe i did, i dont remeber. which isnt a good thing.
i really enjoy memoirs in general and this book gave me a few chuckles but ultimately hes just too jcrew for my tastes. i really enjoyed the stories about amy and that one chapter about his speech therapist.
i read me talk pretty one day, and i thoroughly enjoyed it, but it wasnt until a couple years later i read Dress your family in corduroy and denim, and from there i was hooked. next i read naked, then holidays on ice, and i now have read all of his books one or more times.
i would say it is an okay place to start, but if you arent immediately hooked, dont give up!! i liked dress your family... better.
barrel fever is really excellent as well but that is about half fiction/half memoir, separated into stories. you know, actually that would be an excellent one to start with.

i enjoyed "me talk pretty" immensely, i think it's an excellent read. apart from that, i've only read "the santaland diaries" so far - altso a brilliant, very entertaining book.
I love David Sedaris. There is a hilarious story in that book about dealing with the aftermath of someone else's unflushed turd. Start there and you'll probably finish the whole book. Its not rocket science and requires no deep thought, but its great to laugh loud.

I looooove David Sedaris. I've seen him read three times and own all the books. I like him because he writes to the inner wierdo in all of us; I reccommend starting with "The Late Show" in Me Talk Pretty as oppossed to the turd one, but that's just a preference. I think you should read it and enjoy it...
And if you're looking for more of the "in the now" books, check out...
Nah, read David Sedaris. Almost made a thread tangent there, sorry.
The only david Sedaris book I've read is 'dress your family in corderouy and denim'.
I really enjoyed it, it's only of the only books that I've read that has actually made me lol.
Oh I love him. Naked is one of my favorite books period, and I think it's superior to Me Talk Pretty One Day. Naked is more complex and honest, I would say. But I started off with Me Talk Pretty One Day myself, and I loved it enough to seek out Naked.
The only memorable story in Barrel Fever for me was the final one about being Santa's elf in a mall. That's one of my favorites of his.
If you're into listening to stories being read aloud to you, the website for This American Life has a link to their episode "The Cruelty of Children" in which Sedaris reads one of his better-known stories. Actually, the entire episode is worth listening to if you're into that kind of thing.
