It's an interesting story and that's what kept me reading, but it's seriously horribly written, characters have no depth, and the ending is a huge cliche.
The movie was acctually better.

I have a strange adverse reaction to things that are over-hyped and I have never mustered the inclination to read it. Maybe I should read it, at least I can have an opinion on it when all my friends ask me if I've read it.

I haven't read the book, but I went to see the film the other night.
I think the whole 'conspiracy theory' regarding mary magdelene is very interesting, but the 'plot' dan brown has created around it was just mind numbingly dull.

In conclusion I'm not planning to ever read the book, but may read the 'holy blood and holy grail' book just because as I said the theory interested me alot more than Browns plot. As somebody else said, the Tony Robinson documentary was much more interesting, as where some of the other documentaries channel 4 has bombarded us with recently in the run up to the film.

ps I love the way stephen fry described it as "complete arse dribble”.
you've got to love the fry

Thumbs up

I just finished reading it. I was quite satisfied. I'm glad I didn't listen to the naysayers as it was truly enjoyable and exciting.

Yeah, it had great potential to be a great book. But it just sucked. The movie was worse...

I don't really like dan brown's writing style and the plot bored me a bit too, but I really enjoyed reading about all the conspiracy theories, so I think it was worth my time reading it.

Good book, I really enjoyed it. One of the first books in a long time I actually found myself getting excited about during the day so that I could return home to read. I didn't really mind that it was written like a film either. Brown is an extremely intelligent man and, while his conventional literary skills are limited, his books do possess a quality that is absent in some of the greatest novels of all time - the ability to captivate. I've also read Digital Fortress Angels and Demons, which weren't as good as the Da Vinchi Code in my opinion, and I intend to read some of his other work sometime. The Da Vinchi code can be enjoyed by a wide, varied audience, and is educational as well as enjoyable. You tend to retain bits of infomation without realising it, because it's so interesting. The part I most appreciate retaining was actually the references to pi. It's one of the sole aspects of the book that's entirely factual, and the only indication that there could be a God. It evoked a curiousity in me to read more into divine numerology. I'd recommend this book to anyone. I really wish that it wasn't made into a movie.
