taken from chapter 25 of 'Rimbaud', entitled 'Mr Holmes'. This chapter mostly focuses on Rimbaud time in the army and his get away on a ship. He managed to escape by calling himself Edward Holmes. Anyway, this is taking about when the men were being trained for combat in the jungles of Java:.
Rimbaud whiled away the hours with a prositute named Rotte Pietje. The dutchman who claims to have rescued him from her pimp, found him ' a spoilt over grown school boy who went mad as soon as he had some gin in him'
Ok, this from chapter 29 ' The unknown'. It talks about when Rimbaud first started to live in Harar:
Whatever Rimbaud's letters might suggest, he was not living like a hermit. In April, Bardey noticed 'the incontestable signs of syphilis in his mouth'. Since the first symptoms appear within a month, he must have contracted the disease in Harar, which confirms his claim that it did not lack the basic amenities of 'civilization'. According to Bardey ' he took the greatest care not to pass the illness on to us by eating or drinking utensils.' It did not prevent him from enjoying the company of several other women

I didn't know of that, er, testimony or whatever you wanna call it. Maybe I'll get the book. I would like to know more about the dutchman and that ... I suppose it could be complete nonsense, but then, there's a name, which gives it more credibility. Too bad he weren't photographed at that time, it would help confirm things. Seems like he was shy of the camera for some reason ...
