| | | Dry by Augusten Burroughs Ok so most people have read Running with Scissors but i was curious to know how many people have read Dry.
I'm about 3 quarters through it and the last couple of chapters have been a little slow, but apart from that it's a pretty decent read.
It gives me a whole new perspective on alcoholism. When i hear the word "Alcoholic" I picture someone with the need to drink constantly, who can't hold a job, who has become such a slave to alcohol that they only leave the house to go to a bar.
But he had a (somewhat) functioning life outside of his drinking, i certainly didn't class him as an alcoholic when i began reading the book.
(Maybe it's because im a pretty crazy drinker myself!)
So how did you feel about the book? (Not in comparison with Running with Scissors, but as a memoir on its own.)
Has it changed your perspective? |

At the beginning of this review I compared a memoir to reality TV both allow me to explore my inner voyeur, but memoirs - good juicy ones - leave you with something more raw. Augusten afterall is human - and although the events in his life may be different than anything I can imagine in my own - his emotions are something anyone can relate to. |

| | | i'm about halfway through Dry and i'm taking my time getting through it because i really love the way Augusten Burroughs writes. Running With Scissors was definitely funnier, but Dry is very insiteful.
i've also read Magical Thinking, but in my opinion, it wasn't as great as RWS or Dry. |

| | | I'm reading this now. It's a good read, I really like Augusten.
Has anybody read Possible Side Effects?? Its funnier. But is a collection of short stories. I suppose you have to read either dry or running with scissors to believe some of the situations in it. |
