The book is cool because she's ultrafamous and it's a bizarre thing for someone ultrafamous to do. On that level it makes a lot of the otherwise banal stuff in it rather awesome. Just because you know all sorts of average people opened it and as a result were confronted with, like... dykes and S/M. Weird shit (to them). I mean, she's biting someone's asscheek. And they're in a jockstrap. And she's the best-selling female artist of all time.

It's hard to overestimate how prudish a lot of people are. I mean, look at HighClassHo - he thought the book was a big deal. I think I saw it when I was 15 or so, and found it retarded. Why would someone making porn in a world already full or porn be shocking? The human race is an embarrassment.

Anyway on it's own merits I think the book is a snore. But for a major celeb to do, I thought it was cool. It's a very um... permissive book? It has a nice silly quality to it. Doesn't fetishize or commercialize stuff. Like there's that picture that's just a genderfuck, where they use a mirror to make it look like the guy has a tit. That's cool! It doesn't blow my mind, but it's totally cool.

Another reason I like the book is because people criticize Madonna for stealing from the gay community a lot, but the Sex book really shows her putting her money where her mouth is and risking humiliation to promote a genuinely pansexual positivity. There are pro-dyke pictures, there are pro-hetero, there are blatantly homoerotic pictures...

Again, as a mainstream moment, it's nice.
