| | | Running With Scissors- So are you guys going to go see the movie? It comes out October 11th.. Here's the trailer: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0439289/trailers
I kinda wish Wes Anderson had made it instead of this Murphy person... the scenes with Annette Benning and Alec Baldwin are a little too polished/Hollywoodized for this story in my opinion.
I'm still going to see it though and I really hope it doesn't suck. But definitely read the book first if you haven't already! |

| | | Fuck yes I'm going to see it.
I just hope it does Augusten justice. He's definitely my favourite modern writer, I think...I find his life fascinating.
And yeah, I think Wes would have done a great job with it. |

| | | Love the book. The movie, I figure, will just sit there on its fat ass congratulating itself for being so surreal, and will be sort of a bad Tim-Burton-meets-Ghost-World thing.
One of the amazing things about the book is that Augusten knows he is the weirdest kid on the block, and that he could have all the coolness points he wants, but instead he undersells himself into something really believable and human. The quiet charm of him as a kid -- his quirky mix of innocence, sadism and narcissism -- is the main reason the book really works, is convincing, and isn't just a long list of sad absurdities.
By contrast, this is being done by one of those over-the-top network homos from Nip/Tuck, which I've never seen. I figure it's another pretentious melodrama like House and Law & Order and everything else these days. |

I don't like that show much, it's fucking weird, but in a bad way. And yeah, it's kind of pretentious. |

Stellar cast though. I think its going to be hysterical.
I was watching that m night flick with rosie odonnell and that kid searching for god, and i was like, who the hell is this kid and why does he look familiar. Turns out I'm on crack and had no reason to think he looked familiar, but hes the one playing Augusten. I love imdb, where you can accidentally find out that your favorite books are going to be on the big screen. yay |

| | | I really admire Augusten. Not long ago, I read a totally pragmatic article he wrote in Esquire about finding long-term relationships using the internet. The article outlined his suggestions for how to broadcast the realistic truth about yourself in your personals ad and get the kind of person who will appreciate the actual you, and mentioned that he met his boyfriend via an internet personals ad seven years ago and they're still together and are happy. The whole article is simply him suggesting how to find love via the net, because he thinks it's a helpful tool; there aren't even any clever anecdotes in it.
I fucking love fundamentally unpretentious artists! I hope the movie makes him rich and he & his boyfriend can eat sushi Monday thru Friday in their swimming pool. |
