I was on my lunch break at my job today when I overheard the most insane conversation ever. This woman was looking at a Star magazine and said this out loud in the break room:
"Halle Berry is real pretty for a black woman, don't you think?"
Problem is, nobody else thought what she said was wrong. Gotta love Florida.  |

| | | My boyfriend is Muslim, and last week when that big terror news broke, people at work were saying things like "are you sure your boyfriend isn't an extremist?" or "better watch out for your boyfriend, make sure he doesn't go boarding any planes". (I'm white and agnostic; he's from Bangladesh and as I mentioned, Muslim)...and this is in NYC. I have a picture of him on my desk and people were cracking jokes right there at my desk.
When it comes down to things, you can't really change people...especially when people are scared of Muslims in the day and age we live in. And especially in NYC...there seems to be an underlying fear of them here in the post-9/11 world.
And Emily, Florida is SUPER racist...you should've seen the stares my boyfriend and I got while visiting my parents down there a few months ago! That's Bush country for ya. |

Because the white manager thought they were stealing based on color. Meanwhile, the white fucked-up kids would steal cigarettes right in front of them and NOTHING would be done. It was truly insane. |

It's not that closeminded. I'm basically talking about those who get treated better then we actually do, yet they complain about their cultures and whatever else not getting enough respect, or their rights being limited.

I know a lot of Muslims who are very much "in the middle"....'course, all of them are in my age range (mid-20's) and were either born here or have become extremely Americanized, so that could have a lot to do with it.
As for conversion, well...as of now I'm agnostic so it's not entirely out of the question. He has not brought it up, in fact if anything, I'm the one showing more and more interest in the religion...which is really how it should be!  | |
