Stupidity... Ignorance... Lack of knowledge... It annoys me. It makes me agressive... And you?

Racism and homophobia are stupid, I know, but I'd like in this thread that you write concrete examples that you have witnessed.


I know that the word "stupidity" is very abstract, but I'm sure you know what I mean!

This thread is stupid but it's a little bit cathartic for me.

Here is some examples :

There was a girl at college always sitting next to me. I had nothing in common with her... She was a kind of Reinfield for me exept she was eating muffins instead of insects. I'm going to call her "Miss Muffin" here because it would be very mean to write her name.

I was talking with a girl I know about the Holocaust. Then, Miss Muffin asked me : "Who is Holocaust?" I will precise that she wasn't 13 years old, she was 20 years old. So I told her what was the Holocaust... She didn't understand... She didn't know what was World War II, a genocide, a Jew... I don't know how this girl got her high school diploma.

Then, we had to make a movie for an art history class. The subject was the 40s. As Miss Muffin has no knowledge about History, I wrote the whole scenario. I made a barbie explosion in the forest ("During this time, in Nagasaki...") to show it was the end of the war. When we were making the movie, she seemed to have fun and I was sure she did understand why the barbie explosion! I asked her to write the description of our project because I had made most of the work. She told me she had a lot of trouble doing it because she was bad in History. She wrote : "The barbie explosion is the genocide in Nagasaki at the end of the 40s". There is a big difference between a genocide and an atomic bomb... I wanted to punch her. Sometimes I was trying to learn her the basic stuff but she was telling me to stop because she had no interest in it. She was responsible of her own ignorance.

I can share other stories involving Miss Muffin... I guess everyone knows a Miss Muffin.

Now share me examples of stupidity that drives you crazy!

I'm sorry for my bad English!

This is way harsh, but my mother drives me crazy sometimes. She's not entirely thick but sometimes she just comes out with the daftest things. I couldn't even give you a funny example, I try my damnedest to forget about the things she says. I get worked up for a moment but then I feel bad because I'm just being a snooty little snob because I got a better education than her. I try to explain stuff I know to her but it often goes way over her head.

Having said all that, she's probably got a grip on what the holocaust is, and all that goes with that.

The thing that has bothered me most in recent times is the things she says while my father has been in hospital. He got MRSA after a week in there, which isn't exactly a great thing but not the end of the world either. Since she was told about that, she's been convinced that every damn thing that goes wrong with him is due to that and acts like the hospital is trying to pretend that's not the case. Almost implying the hospital is utterly and completely negligent when, in fact, they've largely been doing a great job. I just feel like screaming at her: quit being so tabloid reactionary about it; if the entire ward of patients had got it, maybe there'd be something to get angry about. As it happens, it just seems to have been him and it's probably as likely to have been passed to him from one of the family, as it is to have come from a nurse. Quit whining about a goddamn chest infection that they have under control when we've plainly got bigger things to worry about like his reduced motor functions and brain damage, thank you very much, mother.

I understand a little bit your "feelings" toward your mother. I had a better education than my mother and she is full of prejudices toward blacks or gays.

She said that gays wearing dresses when they are all alone should get arrested and they should loose their reputation... They were arrested when she was young...

I thought about other examples of stupidity... And examples involving Miss Muffin are multiple...

I was talking to her about Kurt Cobain and she asked me : "who is Kurt Cobain?"...
It happened to me several times to talk about Courtney and people asked me : "who is Courtney?"... But "who is Kurt Cobain" made me really agressive...

I was talking to her about music... I asked her what music she did listen... Then, she tried to act like if she was a real metalhead... "I listen to metal" she said, and believe me she was looking proud. I asked her what bands she likes. She said : "well...uhhh... Black Sabbath and Ozzy. My father have their CDs". Then I asked her if she was liking death metal, trash metal, black metal, hair metal, the Twisted Sisters. She didn't know what was the Twisted Sisters nor all the genres I mentionned. And she was unable to give me the title of a Black Sabbath's track...

The thing towards my mother is really just out of frustration. And I guess her reaction to the hospital stuff is just her own way of dealing with her frustration. I just find it hard to get mad at the nurses because, after all, they're the ones we rely on to get my father better. But then I just get mad at her. We're no better than one another.

I don't know if my mother is particularly ignorant. I was watching the news yesterday and there was a report on the Israel-Lebanon situation. I jokingly made a comment out loud to the effect of "they should all get hit over the head with frying pans", which is my own peculiar way of dealing with that kind of news when it's freaking me the fuck out and I want to turn it off, but know I shouldn't. Helps me to lighten things in my mind so I don't get so wound up. But then, bizarrely enough, my mother agreed. It wasn't a comment made to be agreed with, y'know. I don't want her to agree with me when I'm saying ridiculous shit.

lol. I tried during one year to get rid of her at college. She was always sitting next to me. I'm not a mean person usually so I tried subtile manners to get rid of her.
For example, I don't have a discman nor a mp3 player... I just have an old sanyo walkman. I brang it to the college and I was saying : "Look at my crappy walkman. The sound is bad, my ears are bleeding but I will listen music". As she was talking to me, I was playing with the volume without answering to her. I wanted to look like a person who prefers to have a headach that talking with her.

A lot of people told me that they didn't understand why I was talking with her because we don't seem to have anything in common!
She is very little, very thin... She is quiet, calm... And she wears glasses. If you don't know her, you think she is an intellectual. But she isn't. She had very bad results at high school and at college. And she had no interests. She is bad at everything... Maybe you think she is cool to go out with, or a party girl? No! She is so straight.. She never touched drugs and she doesn't drink. She is not funny at all. Going to college was a nightmare for me... Not because it was boring... Because of HER.

Everyone has his/her own way to react to something.

The fact that your mother agreed is a little bit disturbing! But maybe she wasn't really thinking it.

Another example of ignorance... Miss Muffin again...

In our French class, we had to choose a book (Fantastic) to analyse. I told her I wanted to read a book from Lovecraft. She didn't know who it was. It's not really a problem that she didn't know who it was. The problem is that she was acting like if she knew Lovecraft.

The day after :

Miss Muffin : I think that I want to read a Lord Craft book.
Me : Hahahahaha it's not Lord Craft, it's LOVECRAFT.
Miss Muffin, looking humiliated : Uh... No, it's Lord Craft
Me : You didn't know Lovecraft before I talk to you about him! I know who is Lovecraft since I'm 13!
Miss Muffin : Lovecraft?
Me : L-o-v-e-c-r-a-f-t. Lovecraft.

If the day before she would have tell me she didn't know who it was, she would not have looked so ridiculous...

Then, 15 minutes after... We were talking with other students...
Miss Muffin : I think I will read a Craft book.
Me : (this time, I didn't laugh... it was pathetic) It's not Craft, it's LOVEcraft!
Miss Muffin : One of my teacher told me it was ok to call an author only by his last name.
Me : But his lastname is LOVECRAFT. His first name is Howard Philip!

Argh. I can empathize. My mother is by no means stupid or uneducated, but sometimes it's like she's a robot playing tapes. She'll have certain things that she gets into and just talks about them over and over. Little bits of "wisdom" that I hear over and over. They just sound so simple and trite. It drives me bananas, and I get annoyed and snotty when it happens, and then comes Le Grand (recovering) Catholic Guilt.

I think I am reacting to the fact that she sounds like HER mother when she does it, and my grandmother is suffering from dementia. I look at both of them and part of me is disgusted that they don't have less trivial things to say, because both (especially my mother) could have literally done ANYTHING if they had made different choices in their lives. I suppose it's good that I rebel against that a bit and don’t follow in their footsteps in that regard.

As for stupid people... I can't say I have ever had classmates who didn't know about the Holocaust, but I've certainly had some pretty dumb ones. One of my law profs made us have a debate on same sex marriage using the different legal theories we had been studying to make pro and con arguments. That was a train wreck and a half. One guy used natural law theory to say that homosexuality was only natural in prison because animals only have gay sex in zoos. :vomit:
