What makes someone a something

So this has been on my mind for a time, and then sparked off by a couple of things. First, Clotty's Mexican heritage (Clotty is Mexican) and Misfitcult being a man of colour (I am sure he is).

But mostly by this Japanese German girl I am seeing. She says she is more Japanese than I am Dutch. We both have mothers from other countries (she is German, I am English), but she speaks better Japanese than I speak Dutch, and cooks more Japanese food than I do Dutch. I however, have lived in Holland for 9 years, and have visited often when I was younger. She has been to Japan only about 10 times.

But I ended up agreeing with her.

So what makes someone a something? Is it speaking the language? Or is it a passport? Or is it something else, just a feeling?

Can I just say I am Jewish because I want to, or does that really mean that I have to be born from a Jewish mother? Just an example? Is someone who reads the Torah everyday etc more Jewish than someone who came from a Jewish mother and never gave a damn about any of that stuff?

IDK, it's got me thinking.

i'm actually a woman of colour as well.

did you know 50% of rioters in los angeles in 1992 were mexican?

you never hear about that tho, bc in the news media, mexicans rank even lower than black folks.

that's why i'm black.

you could be a man of colour too if you weren't a moby******.

Do you speak Spanish?

I don't mean to offend you, and Mexico is a big place, but I would never have thought you were Mexican from the way you express yourself or your pictures. But you are a Mexican.

Maybe it's just because you were born there. Do you feel more Mexican or American?

So your parents are Mexican?

I want to know why you identify more with Mexico than the US, or Japan now I guess.

Is it kind of like the Irish in NY, who say they are Irish but when they go back to Ireland it's like, hmm, no sonny, just no?

It's probably not like that, is it?
