| What makes someone a something So this has been on my mind for a time, and then sparked off by a couple of things. First, Clotty's Mexican heritage (Clotty is Mexican) and Misfitcult being a man of colour (I am sure he is).
But mostly by this Japanese German girl I am seeing. She says she is more Japanese than I am Dutch. We both have mothers from other countries (she is German, I am English), but she speaks better Japanese than I speak Dutch, and cooks more Japanese food than I do Dutch. I however, have lived in Holland for 9 years, and have visited often when I was younger. She has been to Japan only about 10 times.
But I ended up agreeing with her.
So what makes someone a something? Is it speaking the language? Or is it a passport? Or is it something else, just a feeling?
Can I just say I am Jewish because I want to, or does that really mean that I have to be born from a Jewish mother? Just an example? Is someone who reads the Torah everyday etc more Jewish than someone who came from a Jewish mother and never gave a damn about any of that stuff?
IDK, it's got me thinking. |
