Aaron this reminds me of once when we were little kids and my sister attempted the same. Without unplugging and she got shocked hard. She was crying and my mom had to pull her away from the toaster because she was sort of frozen there.

i actually tried this and it didn't work.

so then i stuck the wooden handle of a steak knife down in there.

but i guess wood carries electricity too?

i don't know. i failed physical science.

it's not a good idea.
but, if you have to, you have to.

the goal is to make the knife (or other metal implement you're using) -- i vote fork. then you can stab and pull from the top, instead of try to get into the hole and pull with a knife -- not touch the heating coils. the risk if you getting electrocuted, is pretty low. and i feel like most toasters have a grate between the coils and bread, making touching the coils directly with more metal, hard. but it could still happen, especially if you were say drunk and being extra retarded.

so, i wouldn't do it in my toaster, now.
but sober me would.

but if it's UNPLUGGED ...is the big question here.
