Roommates sound even worse than housemates, and I've had some bad housemates. I don't know how you Americans do it.

My housemates in second year used to leave the back door open pretty much every night, which meant that I had to go downstairs from the third floor to shut it all the time. Sometimes I'd get home and the front door would be wide open. Bear in mind that my old street was notorious as 'the most burgled street in Britain' (I think the news of the world called it this, Notts police dispute it.) I'm one of very few out of my friends in Nottingham who didn't get burgled - I consider it something of a miracle.

I lived with most of the same people in third year, in a different house, except this time I was in the room above the most annoying boy. I didn't realise quite how horrible this would be until it happened and I couldn't do anything about it. He woke up in the afternoon/evening and would stay awake all night, and his favourite activity was listening to or playing really bad (and really loud) guitar music through his huge bass amp, which made my floor vibrate. He was also quite druggy; we had to take him to the hospital once because he was having fits. Not great. Once I found a drug dealer wandering around the house looking for a way out, because he couldn't understand how to use the strange lock on the door.

Oh, did I also mention that some of my housemates were the messiest people I have ever met? Some of them were nice but I am very glad I don't ever have to live with most of them again, or even see them again.

i don't see why that makes someone a bad roommate but i think pretty much all roommate situations will be weird and i've had REALLY BAD roommates who were openly hostile/controlling/wanted to **** me/were addicts of hard drugs.
A simple "Hi" would suffice. Ignoring my presence when we are friends or I thought we were is simply put, cold. It's a new development, she's a very talkative girl. Obviously I'm going to ask her what's going on because after almost a year of living together I can tell that she's being passive aggressive about something. Which, in my opinion doesn't make a good room mate. I've had far worse situations than this one. It's just frustrating when I finally think that this room mate situation worked out and I get proven wrong towards the end.

chances are there may be something small that is bugging her but she's too passive aggressive or feels too awkward and uncomfortable to bring it up to you. in my experience, most roommate problems start over something small that could be easily cleared up in one convo but instead no one says anything and then it just snowballs. i would just ask her if you've done something wrong because it gets ugly if you let it go.

i think she meant roommate in the american sense of the term to mean housemate/flatmate. some people only have roommates in college and hopefully for only one year.

we just had someone new move in to my old room. the grand room with the windows and all the sunlight. so far so good. she is friendly, doesnt seem to mind if everyone uses her stuff...i dont know. she seems fine. our last roommate was our good friend. though she was never around.

when i first moved out here i lived in an apt with a few people who totally didnt live their lives like me. it was fine living wise. like there were no problems or fights. it just wasnt a particularly friendly environment.

anyway, i havent had horror roommates.
