Help me please. This may be a common problem, but I haven't a clue what to do

My computer will not load the desktop after the Windows 2000 (<-- I know right ) screen comes up

and I get a blue screen with STOP: 0x0000007B (ox8184 etc etc) Inaccessible boot device.

I don't have the windows disk that came with the computer or a restore disk and I tried hitting F8 when the second screen loads to try to toggle the safe mode (and all of the other modes) but it is the same result.

Is the computer just screwed? Is the geek squad needed? This borrowed mac-top cannot properly install real player plug ins without an administrators password and so I am missing viable updates on a few of my choice pornographic websites

and that's not making me very happy
especially since the computer screwed up when someone else used it.

Suggestions?

the blue screen is bad news.
it essentially means you're fucked. or about to get fucked.

sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
i went through 4 PCs that all died a blue screen death.
i'm onto macs now for that reason.

maybe mikerochip can help you? it might be fixable, but blue screen = bad news

Eh, it might be able to be fixed, but not easily.

A simple chkdsk might fix it, but you'll have to take the disk out and put it in another PC to do that.

Or a driver file is damaged somehow.
That'll be impossible really to find which one.
But a format and reinstall will fix it.
Again, not easy to do.

Lastly, the disk might actually be dying, and there's no fixing that.

So, really, you need someone that knows what they're doing to attempt to fix this.

I assume its an old pc, given that its running win2k.
It may not be worth fixing.

It is fixable, but as said above, you need someone who knows what they are doing to sort it for you, or to guide you through step by step.

If you don't mind losing everything you can format the harddrive and reboot Windows from CD... but otherwise you'd need someone geeky who can come rescue all your files first.

My old PC has done this a few times but it still works fine after a few reformats. Needless to say I keep all my files on an external harddrive now anyway!
