| | | I ponder why Cindy Margolis is the number one most downloaded chick on the internet. Anyone here download her pics?
I have a feeling that she has that designation due to the sheer number of years she has been on the internet (since the late 80s) and she was associated with AOL before people know they actually could go 'all willy nilly' over the internet and do as they chose.
Who here was downloading Cindy Margolis pics in 1997? Who here is still downloading Cindy Margolis pics?

someone seriously needs to make a documentary of people in the hours prior to their death. this whole fascination is triggered by the fact that people always remove their shoes before jumping off a bridge into water, because its a thing we're taught as children not to get our shoes wet. but you're going to die? so why fucking bother. I think perhaps the calming nature of routine behaviour maybe distracts them from impending doom.

the calming nature of routine behaviour... that phrase made me think of this.

Wanting to die is not a sufficient reason for me to stop being really anal-retentive. I'd never kill myself, but if I did I'd probably be a total cunt and make sure I specifically blamed other people for me killing myself; one last act of vindictive cuntitude!

basically we have to go all the way back to about 7000 BC - this is where the earliest forms of "writing" are found. the earliest forms of writing were symbols and ideographs (pictures to represent words) and could certainly hold some kinds of information, but there was no indication of any sort of linguistic information.
out of these evolved the hieroglyphs, which were partly ideographic AND partly phonetic in their most evolved form. a hieroglyph could represent a picture or a sound, but in the primitive stages, there were ideographic. at the same time, cuneiform was developing in sumer. what began as pictures gradually became less concrete and could represent a picture, a number, or a syllable by around 2500 BC.
so pictures stayed pictures but began to represent syllables as writing evolved.
as you may know, the first alphabet as we understand it is the phoenician, which, like the other examples, evolved out of the pictures which became more simplified until they weren't so much picture at all anymore. the names given to the letters (and thus the sounds) came from the meaning of the original hieroglyph. and if you look at the phoenician alphabet, you can see how it evolved into the latin, greek, cyrillic, hebrew, arabic, etc scripts.
that's quite simplified and i'm very sorry if it's a bit muddy or seems too brief. i haven't had to discuss this in a while so a lot of this information is a bit rusty so dates may not be quite exact and things like that. it may help you to actually look at the phoenician script (and its parents) and see how our letter A came from a picture of an ox (or was it a cow? i'm not sure).
