| | | Gender Inequality and Batman This week I've been assisting the production of some short documentaries at Channel 4. One of the girls who was being filmed about her identity is obsessed with Batman, and so we wanted to get a hold of a Batman costume for her to wear.
I know it's Bat man but I didn't realise how hard it would be to find a costume that would fit a girl. nowhere had them. Another assistant told me to "just get her a Batgirl one instead" but
a) Batgirl is completely different to Batman, and it wouldn't have made sense in the documentary
b) The girl in question is 15 and all the Batgirl costumes were a bit sexed up, and given that I was working under the guidance of the NSPCC, I couldn't really get away with forcing her into what is essentially a fetish outfit.
ANYWAY, long story short, I found Batsuits for men, for kids and for dogs but not for girls/women.
Sigh. At Halloween I always want to dress as a male character. It's much more of a disguise, y'see? Anyway, I just thought this was interesting. You don't have to agree.
Oh, and for your pleasure, here is the Batdogsuit:

which of course she had to buy from a sex shop
i wonder if the batman suit could be regarded as a fetish suit. are we sexist or asymmetrically sexualised for just seeing the fetish in the female suit?

I'm sure some Batman suits could be regarded that way by some, but the fact remains that there are Batman suits available for young children, and most of those for adults are simply larger versions of these. Kind of baggy, kind of silly with fake muscle-padding. The Batgirl costumes are all tight and revealing, some are kind of rubberised and... I don't know. I suppose there's just more overtly suggestive. Which sounds like a contradiction, but I'm sure you know what I mean.
I should add that I don't think Batman hasn't become sexualised or anything over the years - George Clooney's suit had nipples, let us not forget.
I suppose that traditionally, male superheroes don't have to be sexy to appeal to core comic demographics, and that this element comes later. With female characters, though, there needs to be a sexual core there somewhere. Which I don't really have a problem with - I just wish that a girl could dress up as any superhero she wanted without having to sexually objectify herself. I wish Batman suits for girls were easy to get hold of.

| | | codpieces too. lets not forget those.
um. i dont know, i mean batman IS a male character to begin with... and im pretty sure the whole reason a batgirl was ever introduced was to make it a little more equal. add a female into the heroes of that comic. same reason they came up with a supergirl. yes?
i cant really comment much on the halloween costumes tho. i mean, what female ahlloween costume isnt really kind of sexualised?

And actually, i think the boobs would help - the costumes were all way too big for a size 8 girl. I could've pinned the costume but we were hiring it and I didn't want to risk damaging it.
Anyway, I didn't really intend this as a serious thread, I just got fake outraged this week that dogs can be Batman but girls can't.

| | | helloooo he is a man, why should there be a girl's out fit for batman?? that's silly.
Having said that Batman always had GREAT female characters. Batgirl, Catwoman, Poison Ivy the sexiest woman in comics, Thalia, Oracle, etc etc etc. |

shame on you | Wow. We understand Madonna lyrics better than HCH does?
At the first mention of Madonna I was going to say "No Madonna, please" but actually, it's ok that things have turned out this way. HCH - your reps are so red - what happened?
