I was just wondering if anyone can explain how the american school system is laid out, in terms of (school) year and age??

In Ireland, its pretty easy -

2 Schools, Primary and Secondary.

from age 5-12 - Primary school, 13-18 Secondary.

in primary every year is called a class, and in secondary every year is called a year.

So, when I was 13 I was in First Year.

I can't find an american atm to ask, so I'm asking here.
(Is it the same all across america, or does it differ by state?)

I'm asking because I saw something where someone said they did something in school when they were in 8th, but wouldn't do it when they were in 9th.

So, what age were they at that time?? The audience is supposed to know, but I don't have a clue.

(Sorry for the roundabout laying out the question, but I'm concentrating on something else atm)

we have 1st to 12th grade.

there is elementary school 1st-4th, middle school 5-8th and then high school 9th-12th. (or at least thats how it worked where i live. but some times how they split it up differs due to population in the area)

9th grade is freshman
10th sophomore
11th junior
12th senior

here elementary school is k-6, middle school is 7-8 or 9, high school is 9-12

in nyc middle school is junior high and 6-8

age 5 = k(indergarten), age 6=1st grade and so on
