mushroom hunting

anyone ever gone mushroom hunting? have an interest in mycology? apart from psychadelic ones. maybe some edible ones. do you like cooking them?

i guess it's not as popular in western culture. but i hear in eastern europe that fungus is a traditional commonpiece.

"fungophile" is the official term for a mushroom nerd.

my mom and dad pick mushrooms every year.
they LOVE them.
they fry them up with butter and eat them right up.
i have never tried a wild mushroom because when i was a child, my mom gave me one to try and there was a wood tick attached to it.
i swore them off forever.

ha, that's the problem with the wild ones. certain species especially are magnets for infestation. you're lucky it was just a tick and not maggots.

i'm curious, how did your parents get into mushrooming?

this is the common cultural aversion towards fungus known as "fungophobia".

there are actually some pretty slimey, smelly, wrinkled species, but lots of mushrooms are as straight as vegetables. imean, think of eating a tomato. that in itself is pretty gross.

when you say "toadstool" are you talking about one of these:

???

cause i thought those were pretty rare.

i was surprised to learn that a certain species of those fairy ring mushrooms that always shows up in your lawn, is actually edible, and supposed to be really good eating. you should definitely know what you're eating though before you pick them and make yourself sick.
