french translation

i keep having to call hotels in france and my french sucks so i kinda fumble through it with random words and sound dumb and the front desk women laugh at me. all i could think of this morning was je cherche mon ami. can someone tell me how i would say

"good evening (bonsoir right?), can you please connect me with room ____"
and then something cute and clever, merci"

well usually they do, but the bitches this morning didn't and it's not the first time. it makes me feel like a dumb american and i hate that. some of these hotels are in remote areas, paris is always fine. sometimes i think they just pretend they don't understand to be assholes or maybe they really don't. anyway, i figure it would be courteous to fgure out what i should say in french. but i think "connect" may be an english phrase and not the proper translation.

I *think* it's something like "Voulez-vouz connectez-moi avec *room* ..., sil vous plais?"

Though it has been 5 years since I last spoke French with any kind of fluency...

i am fully aware of translation sites (googles is great) so don't think i'm dense or lazy. what i have found is often take the words to be the wrong context and the translation comes out whack. i assume anti speaks french fluently as she is in belgium and her translation seems to be what french people would actually say so i'm going to try that.

"Hi! Parlez-vous anglais"?

Everyone in every European hotel speaks English. It's a condition to be hired. Just ask politely and speak a littler slower.

I don't know if I'm talking utter pish here, but I'm under the impression that the French (and maybe other Europeans) might give numbers like a room number in full form rather than in single digits. I might be totally wrong, though, so anyone feel free to correct me.

Like, if we wanted to get through to room 512, we might say "five-one-two", whereas they'd say "five hundred and twelve" (in French). I'm sure they'd understand if you said it clearly in individual digits, but maybe it's worth thinking about?

- Parce que ça ne servirait à rien, lui répond son ami. Il est plein de trous.
- Alors, pourquoi l'as-tu pris?
- Parce que je ne pensais pas qu'il pleuvrait.

Nobody should ever consider online translators. EVER. They are ALL HORRIBLE. Please, I beg you. They give clunky responses at best, more often than not they're flat out wrong.

true, but they're ace for translating single words, verb tenses, and most importantly noun gender, which is quite a disgusting part of french imo.
