stupid = ignorant?

are these words not synonymous?

i always thought ignorant was a 'fancy' way of saying stupid

my friend thinks they are two totally different words. she thinks ignorant means "uninformed," making it different from stupid.

opinions plz

your friend is correct. ignorant would describe a lack of knowledge or being unaware/uninformed. stupid would describe someone who's not all that intelligent.

i wouldn't feel bad. lots of people don't since now they're pretty much used interchangeably, though ignorant isn't necessarily bad, i.e. "i shouldn't ask my father for help with my biology homework as he is mostly ignorant of the sciences."

exactaly.
futhermore, you can be informed, but stupid. there are plenty of people who recieved the knowledge i did in school, but never absorbed it or put it to any sortof use. they are stupid. not ignorant.

examples would be:

martin got wasted and decided to jump off his frat houses' roof into the pool, and was knocked unconcious upon impact. (so martin did something stupid, as he could have anticipated this. past experiences and lessons would lead one to guess the consequences).

zenon, who's lived in space her whole life - at zero gravity, has just been sent to earth as punishment for trying to break into the computer lab on the space-stay. at her first earth party, she gets drunk, and decides to jump off the roof of a frat house, and dies on impact. (zenon is ignorant, because she's never drank anything before, and has no concept of what alcohcol is. she also has little to no experience with gravity and it's rules).
