But I think you are not giving Nadal nearly enough credit. I'm ready to say right now, he is the greatest clay court tennis player in History and no one will ever challenge the records he will set. And even though Pete Sampras won slams on hardcourt at the Aussie and U.S. Open he could be considered a grass court specialist much like Nadal is considered a clay court specialist.

I still think you can compare sportspeople across decades, sure Nadal now would beat Borg then, but such things are relative. I think 6 French Opens in 7 years is more of an absolute. Mark Spitz was a better swimmer than dozens of swimmers who have since consigned even his best times to history. His 100m Butterfly world record would barely have got him to the top 16 at the recent commonwealth games.
I still say, if you're widely considered the best clay court player ever and win 5 straight Wimbledon titles, that takes some beating!
But if Nadal takes the French I'd be more than prepared to put him ahead of Kuerten, who I was never completely blown away by. Once you get past Kuerten who is left? Borg, Lendl (?), Wilander (?)... he's on his way, but I'm tougher to impress than, say, Jim Courier.
