i've never been a hostel person and this is why. you guys are brave. i've stayed in pretty horrible low budget hotels but there were at least doors that locked.

i have also never travelled alone for pleasure. (only for work). all fun travel has either been with my parents or my husband.

With the exception of the Christian hostel (which was mixed) my only other experience was one time in Argentina where she showed us to our dorm, which stank of feet and had some men asleep snoring at 3pm. And there were three showers at the end of the dorm and a loo, none of which had locks. And I literally turned around and was like.........no. Just no.

I haven't stayed in a hostel dorm for a couple of years; they can be loads of fun if you pick a good hostel or you are alone, but if I'm with a friend now I'll generally try and seek out a cheap hotel because I'm a grumpy sleeper.

I always travel with earplugs anyway...this is what I learnt from two years of living with very noisy, and in one case, entirely nocturnal, housemates.

jstar, I hope you don't get the wrong idea about hostels from reading a few bad experiences on here! They're nearly always fine if you just want a cheap place to sleep for the night. More women should try travelling on their own, it's good for the soul.

Yes! I've had some fantastic times in hostels. Once shared a room with a Shanghai travel agent in Rio and she literally bullied our way into every amazing bar and club in the city. Another time I partied til dawn and then went straight out with a boy from the hostel to the markets of Buenos Aires and watched tango dancers do an amazing dance on a flattened box whilst we drank coffee and wondered how long we could stay up for. He later drowned in India, bit of a bum note for the end of that story.

This is my favourite thread on kr.

I have never stayed in a hostel, but I imagine they are probably a good way to meet people. Is there really that much of a price difference between a hostel and a hotel?

Recently, I have been thinking of doing one of these around the world trips. Maybe by myself, but perhaps with a friend. Anyone interested?
