taking guitars on planes.....

My boyfriend and I are off to spain in a few hours for two weeks! I'm really excited, but this morning we decided we have to bring a guitar. I don't know how we'd get through 14 days with no guitar to play. He's got an old blue electric one that he's very fond of but doesn't mind the risk of taking it on a plane, despite the worry we might lose it as luggage. We like our acoustics too much to take. We're just gonna strum his electric one in the apartment, we usually do that anyway without an amp when we're feeling a bit bored. Do you think it's worth taking the guitar, and what kind of case do they prefer you to take? We don't have a hard case, but we have a soft case with very secure padding. It's such a silly question, I know. Just do you think it's worth taking the guitar, and does that case sound alright?
And goodbye to my kr mateys for two weeks .

Whenever I travel I always take an acoustic. I use a hard case with three adjustable bands. One around the middle of the body, one at the dove tail, and one at the base of the neck. I make sure to have tags with my name, address and phone #s on it. Plus my case is covered with stickers that can be easily identified.

Sometimes if they're nice they let you bring it onboard the plane. They let me take a bass on there from Amsterdam to Dublin a few times. Wouldn't put it in luggage with a soft case though it will get hammered.

From personal experience, DO NOT PUT ANYTHING WITH A SOFT CASE UNDERNEATH THE PLANE!!! If its going under you need a hard case, only risk bringing it as it is if you are allowed to bring it on board with you as carry-on. You may want to ring them first to enquire to see if they will let you.

you could probably get away with taking an air guitar on board.

I took an electric in a soft case on a flight to Spain once. And since the case was for an acoustic guitar, it was oversized to boot. When I took it out, it wasn't even that much out of tune.
