| | | I'm not good with bars or hotels, but I'd advise that you be more specific about 'city center.' There really isn't just one, it depends on where you want to be.

| | | Williamsburg Brooklyn is the center of hipsterdom.
You should check out the Trash Bar, LIT, and Three of Cups.
The metropolitan museum of art is pretty rad.
Avoid Times Square like the plague. There really nothing to see there, it only really good for getting souveneirs and shite.
I suggest SoHo, Williamsburg, and the East Village.

| | | If you want to stay at the center of the city near the empire state building, you won't find anything cheap. It's all very expensive there. |

| | If you don't want to stay at a hostel, have a look at New York Inns. They've got a couple of locations in Manhattan. I've stayed at the Amsterdam on the Upper West Side, and it was fine. Pretty basic, but in an excellent location (if you're wanting to go and get wasted a lot, this place is right above a bar) and a LOT cheaper than other places in that area (particularly since I was travelling alone, since there are five of you, you might be able to stay somewhere a bit nicer if you're splitting the costs). If you are willing to stay in a hostel, have alook at this list on hostels.com: here (The Gershwin is on that list, and I think that's in the area you're sort of looking for... I had a friend who stayed there and said it was good).
I know all native new yorkers say to avoid Times Square, but for a tourist on your first time in the city it really is worth swinging by there one night just to check out all the pretty lights and see that it does indeed look like it does on TV.
Don't be afraid to take the subway if you end up staying a fair ways away from the things you want to see. Just buy a metrocard and keep a subway route map on you all the time, and you're set for getting pretty much anywhere.

so advice? | Your money takes you way farther here, but staying "in-town" will go about 150 in pounds for you per night, unless you bundle it with your flight, the rates are better.
There is tons to do in NYC. Check out the village for certain. Central Park is amazing. And since the trains and busses run all night, you always have transport home. and frankly, after 2am, it seems most people on the subway are pretty blitzed. You being off your nut qon't seem odd to anyone.
and nothing shuts down.
amazing city. |

That photo posted is awesome!!! | October is always lovely. Nice foliage in the park. Also, it's off peak tourist season, so better deals to be had unless you're staying with friends. Then it doesn't matter.
Not certain you'd catch me in NYC in the bitter cold for anything but stranger things have happened, and experience has taught me that they always happen to me. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
