i love houston but i don't think it's very good for people who are visiting. it's really overwhelming.
you should see el paso. it's probably the prettiest and most "texas" place here. plus you can walk across a bridge and go into mexico (though that might've changed with the new passport laws, i'm not sure).
i like austin a lot more now that i live here. it's probably the most traveller friendly city. there are a lot of neat/unusual shops and restaurants and such.
galveston is also nice but can be inconvenient to get to depending on where you're visiting. it's good for a day trip. i like the cemeteries (i have relatives there) as well as the old mansions which you can tour.

i was there the other day, and, while i don't think i could move back, i miss my nights on westheimer and at numbers.
aaron do you still live in denver?

i never go to denver anymore.
denver has tons of seedy history. i always found it a little haunting.
anyway. check out charlies on colfax, it's low-key and i'm sure the locals will tell you it sucks. but it doesn't, its good fun and nice people. stay out of LoDo, it's all yuppies & frat boys. JR's has 50 cent taps on Thursdays, so stay a day later & get trashed. you haven't been to denver if you haven't been to JR's. stick around downtown/cap hill & you'll be fine. the rest sucks and is boring. |

| | i grew up in houston- one of the most populated cities in the u.s. and not quite a tourist city. officials have been trying to make it into one without much luck. it doesn't help that we lost our amusement park, six flags astroworld, a few years back.
anyway, i do love the place--the best city for dining...(hence why it got the title of america's fattest city so often b/c of the sheer # of restaurants per square mile). the galleria in uptown is huge for shopping, esp. luxury...we get rich people flying in from brazil just to shop at louis vuitton, gucci, etc.
montrose & westheimer are great, quirky shopping areas and have some nice cafes and bars...lots of gay ones. the museum district nearby is amazing--houston is great for that!!
the weather sucks in the summer as it's hot and humid.
austin is where i live now as i attend the university of tx and it's known for being off-the-wall. there's even an ongoing campaign to "keep austin weird" by preserving non-chain stores. austin is known, perhaps hyperbolically, as the music capital of the world and we do get the Austin City Limits festival in September (3 days!) and of course, music/film with South by Southwest in March (week long i believe). besides that we have tons of bars and clubs, esp. on the well-knwon 6th st (party central every night lol).
austin is gorgeous since it's in texas's hill country...the sloping roads and basically driving through hills is so fun...it's definitely a more natural city. there's also town lake, a big park with a lake and running trails...and congress bridge, where you can watch one of the country's biggest bat populations fly off at dusk. pretty trippy.
san antonio is great for the riverwalk and the el mercado (spanish for market; sells mainly mexican goods).
galveston is its own little island, about 1 1/2 from houston...but the water isn't great so most college kids head to south padre island for swimming. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
