Best place in Greece?

What's the best area of Greece to visit in August. I want to go there this year and can't decide on which area. I want something with a nice beach, not a clubbing area, but with a few bars/clubs not over-run with drunken idiots a quiet'ish area with enough touristy places to visit.

Any input would be great, thanks

SKIATHOS!!

It's sooooo nice there!! It's a really small island with really beautiful beaches & a little town.. I'm not 100% about the nightlife there though, because when I went I went with my family & I was about 12. It is a beautiful island though, I definitely recommend it.

yeah, I've also heard that Skiathos is probably the nicest island in the Aegean. The Ionian islands are also less touristy (except for Corfu), but I hear that Zakynthos/Zante is awesome:

Also, the Chalcidice peninsula in northern Greece is beautiful and not overly touristy:

I plan on visiting this in Zante this year.
I recommend Zante. Stay on the outskirts of the main town and it is quiet.

cool, you're lucky! I'm going to Greece in September, but I doubt I'll make it to Zante. I am going to Crete though, which makes up for it in my mind.

Zante looks quite nice too, I was orginally wanting to visit Rhodes but I felt that was where everyone goes and wanted to see somewhere with great beaches and scenery. Im into Skiathos so If I can get a good price on there then I shall go there lol.

Olympic Holidays - hotels, apartments and flights to Dominican Republic, Egypt (Red Sea), Goa, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Dubai and Gambia. specialise in Greece / Turkey. They are the ones I plan on using.

I can be your Greece expert I've been everywhere there
Zakynthos is nice but half the island is REAL clubby and druggy.
A real quiet nice island not tourist infested is Milos and it's sooo gorgeous there. Skopelos is pretty nice too.

This summer doesn't look like it's been a good one in Greece. Record heat waves and forest fires (which are actually caused by fucking arsonists due to the government not having the balls to enforce their forest protection laws).

I'm going on friday! I mean, yeah, you get the forest fires every summer, they are totally deliberate. My bf was saying just the other day that there was a fire on the mountain right next to his town (Mt. Hymettos? forgive the spelling?). I don't think I'll like it when it's that close.

Continuing what you were saying about the arsonists, is it true that Greece doesn't have a land register? I feel like I read that somewhere, that it's one of very few countries in Europe that doesn't have one in place? It seems like a lot of the forest fires could be prevented if they just invested the time and money in sorting out the land register thing, and maybe they'd be more able to sort out the people who try to illegally build on former forest land? It's a bit of a shame, especially when you see fires around the Athens/Attica area, which seems to be overpopulated enough already. You'd think people would want to preserve what little woodland there is...

Anyway, I'm either going to be sunburnt, or just burnt, to fuck. It's all good.

- Parce que je ne pensais pas qu'il pleuvrait.

I don't know about Greece, but in Spain it happens too every summer, and I think the land registers are in order, so I'm thinking that it be something more complicated to sort out, and mafias (many times with the "consent" of goverments, who prefer to look the other side) get almost always their way. Makes me fucking sad.

Hey, I hope you're not still in Greece (at least not in the last 5 days). These forest fires that started on August 24th are like Greece's 9/11. They haven't seen devastation like this since WWII. I'm livid watching the Greek satellite coverage. 64 people dead, and so much forest and farm land just gone...it's very depressing.

I had to cancel my September trip for other reasons, but now I'm sort of glad I did. I don't think I'd fare well seeing all of that devastation, especially since most of my relatives live in the affected regions in the Peloponnese.

I phoned my cousins today, and they said that although they are out of danger (for now), the economic and ecological damage will be far reaching for years. It really sucks, because the people who are mostly affected are pretty much poor farmers who's entire livlihood is gone, and were already struggling to begin with.
