Volunteer holidays

I'm sort of hesitant to call these experiences "holidays" but oh well...

I'm writing an article on this area, and looking at companies like WWOOF, Shumba, and IVS where people go and work in a foreign environment. You pay to work for Shumba, but are given weeks in South Africa working on wildlife conservation. At WWOOF, you don't get paid, but everything is provided for you - a place to stay, food etc all in return for your work, usually on an organic farm or similar.

I wondered if anyone's been involved in a programme like this before, and if they'd share their experiences?

i did volunteer work with uni where i went to a rural area for 3 weeks and did vegetable gardens and helped people get social welfare grants etc. it was rad. i recommend it. except the babies dying of AIDS kinda made me sad. a lot.
