People speak highly of Audacity, although it's more digital audio than MIDI type sequencing.

I'm sure there was talk of a project for a AV-specific build of Ubuntu but I haven't noticed anything come of it. I assume it would have been CD bootable, it may be knocking around now.

If you're in the UK, Computer Music mag comes with a free software thingy on it that's meant to be decent, as well as a bunch of not-always-useful plugins.

My copy of Cubase has gone tits up, so think that's what I'm gonna be hitting!

I'm in the US, but we do have that magazine called Future Music, which I'm guessing is prolly along similar lines. Been meaning to get myself a subscription, actually.
