when you write songs, do you write lyrics first and then make them conform to a melody or do you think of a melody first before you write the actual lyrics?

i write melodys and lyrics that just pop into my hea at the time im holding a pen..thats most of the time. never satisfyed

i have lots of potential lyrics im just having trouble writing melodies that sound good with both the lyrics and the song. any advice?

well, i just play my guitar and start singing a melody with no real words over whatever chord progression. so i dont know if u play guitar or what but just singing in the key that your struming helps...im more about goo melody then lyrics

I actually do it in any fashion really, whatever feels natural at the moment. Lots of improv, just fuck around until you get something good.

I generally just pretend I'm Elizabeth Fraser, and write songs without lyrics first. Then I go back and listen to it, and make lyrics based on whatever phrasing I happen to use.

Or sometimes I'll just open up my journal while I play, and just pick out random words and phrases. Then I'll go back and give the lyrics some sort of order or consistency, make them rhyme, etc...

For some reason I have a difficult time doing both at the same time. I think maybe I have a connection problem between my brain hemispheres.
