you don't get to decide what is and what isn't music. it's like saying something is "not art".

| | | Don't get me wrong here, I'm a very open minded person when it comes to music, but I also believe a line has to be drawn between music and sound, much as a line would be drawn between meaningless sprawlings on a canvas and a work of art.
I don't believe that it's up to any individual person to have the authority to define "what is art/music" etc., but I do believe every person has the right to their own line, their own cutoff point.
My personal opinion? I don't have much time for this kind of stuff. Music to me should say something, do something to the listener, or if not affect the listener, at least serve as a form of expression. That to me constitutes a good piece of music.
The closest comparison I can draw there would be what you could call a good piece of writing - you'd rather read something written by someone with an eloquent grasp of the language who'd taken some time and thought into what they'd written. While it might be argued that music like this is a very raw emotional expression, it's like the equivalent of someone just screaming FUCKSHITBASTARDFUCKCUNT or something like that. You get the idea of what they're trying to say, they just express it in very primitive terms.
To me, music should be the equivalent of the well-assembled piece of writing. You should have all the necessary skills and technique, with a flash of creativity in order to create something good. In my opinion, these pieces of music show no real skill, just a willingness to perhaps say what others won't for the simple idea of shock value.
However... In spite of all my criticisms, I'd say a kinda congratulations to the creators of the music, because if nothing else, they have managed to at least spark a little bit of response to what they've done. Although I had said you need all the techniques to put something together as a good piece of music, it can be all too easy to use as an excuse for creating something bland and generic, and if there's one positive thing I can say about Telehorse, it's that they at least had the balls to go and do something that little bit different. |
