interesting interviews about how writers work, please.

I found this interview with Jeff Magnum (of neutral milk hotel) while at work and thought it was amazing. It's a good insight into why he writes music and how he goes about it. I also particularly like the part, when he's talking about songs he wrote after Aeroplane... that goes

They weren't [the songs] abstract in any way, and they weren't really fragmented, either. They just came out like [makes long farting noise].

At this point, Jeff goes into a long monologue describing some of the images and reciting some of the lyrics in the songs, which include a hermaphrodite girl and a boy whose consciousness shrinks to a small point and birds start being born out of his face.

yeah, birds being born out of peoples faces isn't abstract at all. ( I jest but really I think he's one of the most amazing writers ever and would cut off body parts to here those lyrics but he requested they were removed from the interview)

anyway whole thing is here:

post more.

Ah, God bless that man. He's ace. I don't have any good interviews to post since I rarely read interviews and music magazines anymore. I did, however, read a really terrible review in the student magazine last week, one of those interviews where the interviewer is so fervently trying to gain "cool points" with his readers that he barely lets the band get a word in edgeways, and tenuously links every question to the next with some tedious story from his life.

A brilliant one on youtube. You'll probably need to turn the sound up to hear it though...
