once somebody tells me they're trying to "explore their spirituality" or they're a "spiritual" person, i start laughing at them in my head. i don't necessarily hate them, but a little "lol" soundtrack plays in my head while they're talking.

i think the word spiritual has negative connotations, likely due to religion.
i would never go around claiming to be spiritual, but i also think that making a point to not be spiritual or bash spirituality is like saying "i am ignorant of myself"

I dunno what it means to explore one's spirituality. Never heard those words together in a sentence and I agree I would break a wry smile too if I heard one of my friends say it.

That said, I am a spiritual person, in the sense that I practise the Occult and am a medium to the other side. There is a difference y'know.

Having thought further about exploring ones spirituality - I think I relate to this sentence best when I do 'soul-searching' - thats what I call it. This is where I take LSD or magic mushrooms or peyote to expose my inner self to the naked mind. You really learn about yourself in a rape way on these drugs. Basically, when you do a few tabs of LSD, you have no choice but to meet thineself.

I think it would depend on who says they have to explore their spirituality, the sentence can have vastly different meanings.

I'd say the same, though I suspect we mean different things. In my experience, "spiritual" people are people who don't have a religion, but want to act like they do. It just seems like another way of saying "I'm a cool person, I have my mind on cool things that you wouldn't understand because you are not cool".

I mention this because people who use the word to describe themselves (rather than others) tend to be as big a bunch of douchebags as they would be if they went around telling everyone they're cool or beautiful or whatever. People who are actually spiritual/cool/beautiful generally aren't so self-obsessed that they constantly notice things about themselves that make them awesome.

In answer to the original post, yeah, I feel the same, and this is how I justify not feeling like a bad person.

I know what you mean I think. I go to church with my boy a lot. He is a pentecostal christian and I basically go because it makes him happy when I'm there but I honestly don't agree with their teachings at all and find myself laughing in my head at a lot of what the pastor says. They also do that freaky thing where people randomly shout out "praises" to the Lord and raise their hands in the air and fall down on the ground. Its great entertainment. Oooooh and they do that thing where they speak in tongues. Have you ever heard that? Freaky....

Whenever they preach about how you go to Hell if you aren't saved I chuckle, but at the same time I feel bad because these poor schmucks honestly believe that.

yeah, mostly people who say things like that seem (more than) a bit pretentious to me. which is what makes me wanna laugh at them aswell.

I suppose "spiritual" people are expected to be humble and modest about these things. Any kind of incessant self important convo about their faith will immediately make anyone think they're not being serious.
I think the idea is good though (especially if you only confirm being "spiritual" when pressed with such a question) as there are quite a few organised religions out there that forbid the belief or followings of other practises and beliefs of other faiths simultaneously with their own.

Spirituality should make issues of faith a more personal journey which I like, talking about it all the time doesn't really make it "personal" hence the inner "lol" to people listening.

Sure, i do that sometimes too. But being "spiritual" doesn't neccessarily make a person an arrogant elitist. Even if "spiritual" really is code, if you are the type of person who is good at accepting people for who they are, you wouldn't need to make that judgement, would you? Cos it's just another meaningless catergory unless it actually does affect your life.

I try to meditate for 15 minutes a day but I don't recall bks iyengar mentioning how to overcome involuntary errections.

I also own The Power of Now and have read some deepak Chopra. Both of which I found to be more spirit-crushing than enlightening.

Maybe the chi of my muladhara chakra's just backlogged with impacted karma.
