| | | True. Jeremy Hardy did a long rant about basically that, saying that a lot of the people in power act crazy because they're insecure about how they'll be remembered (as if being prime minister or whatever doesn't guarantee that you're a damn sight more remembered than most people by default).
It was a bit over-simplistic (although probably true, at least of Blair), but it did make you think that most of people's anxieties are less to do with their life, and more to do with their fear of death. People indulge excessively because they fear that, one day, they won't be able to do it at all. People try too hard to make an impact on the lives of others because they're worried that they'll be forgotte if they don't. I think that's the problem. It's not that people can't be happy with what they've got. They just can't be content because they know they'll lose it. |

| | | half of all anxiety is about how we are viewed by others and the other half is about how we will one day not be here. notions of "legacy" combine the two. |

| | | do you worry that after you die, it will be as if you never existed? no. i think that after you die, thats it. i dont give a fuck about whatever the hell goes on on this cursed planet after i remove myself from it. some days i think "WELL I'D LIKE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE RLY" but at the bottom of it all, i dont care. i think id be pretty pissed off if my funeral sucked but hey. im not gonna be there. it wont matter. all i want is for people to be sorry about the shitty way they treated me. do you think think that this is part of the human condition? yes or do you think it's just a tendency to regard yourself with far too much self importance? its both, humans are intrinsically selfish. |

| | | I used to like the idea that the afterlife was just attending your own funeral, so that if you'd lived a good life, you'd know it, and if you hadn't, you'd know that too.
That idea is less and less appealing the longer I go without doing anything with my life, and it doesn't help that there seem to be a lot of jerks with way too many friends. But it does lend some validity to my desire to be a rockstar: maximum number of funeral attendants, minimum amount of giving a shit about anyone else but yourself.
I think it's important to think at least a little bit about your own mortality for that reason. If you only have one life, you only have that much time to do what you want. If you don't think at all about that, you might waste what time you have, and even if you only regard the existence of life as a happy accident of evolution, waste is never really a good thing. |
