I'm becoming more and more of a Hindu....but I have delved into Wicca a bit. I really like a lot of the serious people who practice it, they usually have their minds in a better place than most...but...I personally found it to be very inconsistent.
It seems that anyone can have their own definition of what Wicca is supposed to be...to the point that it almost seems like nothing at all in particular...it is different for whomever practices it.
I felt rather unstable with the idea that I could literally pick any god or goddess to worship...or not worship any at all...amongst other loose ideas. It almost seemed that the only prerequisite was to simply call yourself "Wiccan".
Personally, I have a bit more respect towards the entire idea of Paganism in and of itself and reviving of old religions more than a strange and tangled system known as Wicca....and this is not meant to be offensive, simply my take on it.
It's one thing to create a religion based on facts that are SUBJECTIVE, like Christianity or Islam, it's wuite another thing just to make one up, based on facts which are OBJECTIVE, and unproven.
I cannot prove that I was visited by god, but I can prove that I am a witch, hypothetically. I can also prove that there is a history of that self same tradition, but this also hasn't been done.

Yet, you do not understand what it means to speak of oneself in the third person...
by the way: please PROVE you are a witch, as you say you are capable of.

To be honest, I don't have much of an issue with wicca, it just seems a bit silly to me. I don't have too much of a problem with the two who I just replied to either, they're probably nice people, but their posts were fucking stupid.
Edit: in future, if you don't have anything to say against my posts, then don't say anything. Better to be deaf and dumb than to talk shit your whole life.
Get over yourself.
'This is offensive' - Well done, that was the intention, here have a biscuit. Oh dear, i've offended the witches. By eye of newt and bollock of dog they will put a spell on me!
'Everything you said is simply ridiculous' - No come back then? No actual answer to the fact your religion is made up? Gerald Gardner = not terribly dissimilar to J.K Rowling.
Oh and once again, get over yourself!
First off, I don't call myself a witch. I practice an earth-based religion. I've dabbled in Wicca, and studied it, but I consider my religion to be Neo-Paganism.
And I could sit here and explain to you what it means to me to be neo-pagan; but frankly, I don't have the patience for you.
I'd just like to also mention that Harry Potter IS terribly dissimilar to what I practice.

I agree with you on this.
A lot of people who actually write about Wicca though, don't really now what they're talking about, and it doesn't really make all too much sense to me. But i've found some good research that makes more sense.. something more 'follow-able'

Doesn't Christianity have a lot of pagan elements in it? (I know the Virgin Mary is supposed to be based on pagan goddesses, more specifically Athena/Minerva, and that Christmas was chosen to be celebrated when it is so it could coincide with Yule). The whole Trinity thing is based on pagan beliefs, and that's why the same sort of belief exists in Hinduism. I think it all came down to what people were willing and not willing to give up when they "converted".
Also, I've heard that Muslims consider Christians to be pagans.
depends on whom you ask. you might read this. it's also worth noting that some christian holidays bear striking resemblances to pagan holidays.
i don't know about this, but i do know that the qur'an does essentially say that the jews and the christians will go to heaven.
Jews are Gods chosen people. The rest of us are screwed.
Christianity in Europe was really introduced by the Romans, in particular Constantine. But it wasn't popularized really until Charlemagne. Or at least during that period. It was during this period of evangelism that Christians super imposed their beliefs over the existing pagan ones. Making the Christian festivals that we know today. This still happens today with Christian missionaries. Try attending a service in a non-European country and you'll see what I mean.
Anyway the Romans had a much better approach. They combined their gods with local gods eg. Sulis-Minerva.
The term for it is 'Syncretism'.
