well, there are different kinds of chanting. lots of different religions have some form of chanting. the Catholic monks and nuns sing prayers in Latin, in Judiaism there's a special way of chanting the Torah aloud, and if I'm not mistaken the Islamic imams do some sort of chanting that reseambles singing. I assume that what you're talking about though is more the Hindu sort of thing made popular by Western converts like the Beatles, Madonna, the Hari Krishnas, and now apparently Courtney Love.

I don't know too much about this kind of chanting, but apparently it's supposed to send you into some sort of meditative state in which you become closer to God. It has connections with meditation and yoga practices. If you're interested in Eastern chanting I advise you to wikipedia or google it or something, maybe pick up a book on it somewhere. The Hare Krishnas are very big on this sort of thing, and they're always delighted to pick up new converts.

I know from experience the benefits to concentration of repetition. It doesn't even necessarily have to be you chanting. If you listen to/watch something meaningless over and over again, so that you know every nuance and detail of it by heart, it frees your mind to do other things.
