The Hindu Swastika

It's kind of funny and sad that the Nazi party have defamed what was once (and still is) a respected religious symbol that has nothing to do with their actions.

What is the significance of Swastika?
Swastika is regarded as a divine sign by Hindus. The word swastika means auspicious in the Sanskrit language and hence is used to symbolize the welcoming of auspiciousness and driving away evils. The symbol also represents the changing of the universe around the unchanging nature of God.

From: http://www.hindunet.org/faq/fom-serv/cache/12.html

Also even though the symbol itself is not bad, many people associate it with maliciousness and therefore many Hindu's are slowly giving up the symbol in order to "not hurt feelings".

What do you guys think? Should they allow what Hitler has done to take away a sacred part of their heritage?

I should've just made this a Hindu thread as there are other interesting things I'd like to discuss but I'll just start with this one.

I dont think a faith of 3,000 years should have to give up a religious symbol because of its usage by the Nazi party. I think it actually comes down to societies lack of knowledge of other cultures/religous symbolism... "lack of knowledge" probably isnt the best explanation of what i mean, my brain isnt functioning properly this morning.

I don't see why it is anyone elses business what people want to wear even if it is a swastika.

If anything, they should be more actively encouraged to use it, to actually take the symbol back.

I also think Egyptians should be more pissy about goths who wear the ankh.

my family are hindus. and they still haven't given up the symbol. i also still see it in most temples. although they justify the use of it because the swastika that was their symbol originally spins in a different direction than the nazi one.
however, i have never seen any of my family/hindu friends display the symbol publicly. everyone knows that someone will most likely misinterpret it and mistake them for a nazi or some such thing. you most likely won't see it outside of a temple/religious event, unless if you are in india.
