does anyone have any tips on how to take decent photos of christmas lights at night on a digital camera? Mine all turned out pretty ****ty.

Use a 400 or faster ISO setting on the camera or use a tripod with a 200 or slower ISO setting. I'd recommend using the tripod for best results. (400 and above ISO usually will yield grainy images.) They also make what's called a monopod that's a bit more carry-friendly than a tripod.
