I defo agree with u on that point. That was one of the things my mom said to me when i came out... that she worried id get hurt or get a disease by slagging around. Which i haven't. I've had one fella and im still with him The Dawson's Creek character (Jack?) was a good gay character. In no other show has there been a good characterisation of gay men. Queer As Folk, Skins etc all portray gay men as slags. Shows like Will and Grace portray that we're like fairies... though most of my friends are women but our relationships arent anything like Will and Grace... its more human and real.
And the fact that gay men are seen as a must have commodity too...

It's kinda beside the point as well though; even if I'm not a Dawson's Creek-style angel of emotional maturity, it's still wrong to assume that I would have a venereal disease, especially in a hospital situation where it'd be really easy to check.

Just wondering now what the cost of AIDS-testing a person is. They might JUST ABOUT be able to justify this if AIDS-testing any blood that's donated by a "high-risk group" is prohibitively expensive (or at least, more expensive than all the money they spend whining about how there aren't enough donors).

Which the NHS is always trying to say.. they never have money to do these things... High Risk people are always just gonna be that to them... cos they dont wanna spend the money. Money... evil stuff..

I don't know though, wouldn't it be cheaper than doing all these blood drives and organ donation campaigns? They've found that gay people are very willing and motivated towards sperm donation - I guess they feel it's their way of contributing to society in lieu of children - and most would be more than willing to give blood for the same reason.

Oh yeah, that's another thing: far as I'm aware, there's no such bar on gay people donating sperm. FIGURE THAT ONE OUT?

Soz Ash if I veer a little off topic but can I just say that Peter Tatchell should be canonised, or at the very least, have a plinth in his honour. While Nelson Mandela "hemmed and hawed" over the current state of affairs in Zimbabwe, Peter Tatchell had the guts to attempt impose a citizen's arrest on Robert Mugabe for crimes against humanity, and had seven shades of shit kicked out of him by Mugabe's thugs in the process. Could you even IMAGINE someone who must be all of about 9 stone soaking wet taking on Mugabe and his henchmen?? I used to think Peter Tatchell was a whingy little "cause" queen but my opinion of him has been completely revised over the past few years and, IMO, he's a fantastic role model for gays/queers/dykes/LGBT's - as opposed to annoying lavender cliched comedians and "entertainers".

i remember the first time i gave blood, a couple of years back, i went with a friend from uni and i was shocked to find out that he wasn't allowed to donate because he was gay. at this point he'd been in a monogamous relationship for three years and he and his partner had both been tested for HIV and other STIs. i could have slept with a hundred people and have every disease under the sun as far as they were concerned (i haven't, but the point is they didn't ask) but because i was a girl and he was a gay man, he was automatically "high risk" and i wasn't. the nhs are crying out for blood donors and they turned a healthy young man away just because he's gay.

for what it's worth though, the nurse we spoke to that day agreed with us that it was completely ridiculous.

What is with the health service?! It needs reformed... and money needs put where its needed and if it means spending extra cash on checking gays blood so that they can give blood and donate marrow then so be it!
